BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Longwood dealt Campbell a 72-62 loss Tuesday
night at Willett Hall to gain a season split of the series with the
Camels.
The Lancers (8-15) made 25-of-30 free throws and scored 21 points
off 14 Campbell turnovers to offset 38 percent shooting from the
floor.
Despite holding a 42-26 advantage on the glass and shooting 50
percent from the field, Campbell (10-10) never as the host Lancers
committed just 4 turnovers on the night. Campbell hit only 7-of-14
from the line and 1-of-5 from 3-point territory.
Jeremiah Bowman and Antwan Carter scored 20 points each to lead the
Lancers, whose starting five accounted for 70 of the team's 72
points. Martiz Washington added 11, Aaron Mitchell 10 and Durann
Neil 9.
Senior point guard Junard Hartley topped the Camels with 15 points
on 7-of-10 shooting, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Amir Celestin added
13 on 5-of-10 from the floor. However, Campbell's top-two scorers
- Lorne Merthie (0 points on 0-of-2 from the field) and Eric
Griffin (7 points on 3-of-6 shooting) - were held 17 points below
their combined season average (24.7).
Marvelle Harris led all rebounders with 10 in only 19 minutes of
action before he fouled out. Griffin also pulled down 8 boards for
the Camels. Mitchell led Longwood on the glass with 8
rebounds.
Longwood led 34-26 at halftime then stretched the gap to 15 with
16:18 remaining on Martiz Washington's triple. Campbell never got
closer than six the rest of the way.
The Lancers did not commit a first-half turnover and led by eight
at the break despite shooting just 39 percent from the floor.
Campbell fell to 2-6 on the road this year and has dropped its last
4 games away from Gore Arena. Longwood improved to 7-3 at home and
avenged a 93-77 loss Nov. 29 at Campbell.
The Camels return to Atlantic Sun Conference play Saturday at North
Florida (7:00).
