Campbell warms up; defeats Kennesaw State 65-52

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell went a 20-3 run midway through the second half and defeated Kennesaw State 65-52 Friday night in Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball action.

After starting the game just 1-of-17 from the floor, the Camels made 23-of-46 the rest of the way - including 59 percent in the second half - and ended a 3-game losing streak.

Amir Celestin led four Campbell (8-6, 2-3 A-Sun) players in double figures with 13 points, plus 5 assists. Preston Dodson added 12 points, plus 9 rebounds, while Marvelle Harris and Eric Griffin chipped in 11 apiece.

Kennesaw State (3-12, 1-4) dropped its second-straight game and lost for the 12th time in 13 games since beating Georgia Tech 80-63 on Nov. 15.

Aaron Anderson led the Owls with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, plus 15 rebounds. Markeith Cummings contributed 16 on 5-of-15 shooting and Kelvin McConnell had 10. Spencer Dixon, who entered the contest as the A-Sun's 4th leading scorer at 15.8 points per game, finished with just two points on 1-of-6 shooting.

Campbell shot just 22 percent in the opening half and trailed by eight before Anthony Horton's stick-back as time expired and left Kennesaw in front 25-19 at the break.

Despite missing 20 of their first 22 shots, the Camels only trailed 9-5 with 9:25 left in the opening period because Kennesaw missed 7 of 10 and had 7 turnovers in the same span.

After Cummings' pull-up jumper gave Kennesaw a 32-26 lead with 14:57 to go, Campbell answered with a 20-3 run as Harris (8), Martell Jackson (5) and Dodson (4) combined for 17 points. Merthie's three put the Camels ahead for good (34-32) with 12:32 remaining.

Jackson's free throw pushed the Camel advantage to 11 (46-35) with 8:56 remaining. The Owls closed to within six (54-48) with 3:05 to go on Anderson's rebound and follow shot, but KSU never drew any closer.

Griffin scored all 11 of his points in the second period, while Harris and Dodson each tallied 10 during the same span as CU outscored the guests 46-27 in the final half.

After suffering two-point setbacks at home Monday against Jacksonville (67-65) and Wednesday vs. North Florida (57-55), the Camels converted 20 Kennesaw turnovers into 16 points. The Camel bench - including 7 points and 5 boards from Martell Jackson - outscored the Owl reserves 22-6.

Campbell improved to 5-2 at home this year, 27-9 all-time at Gore Arena, while Kennesaw State dropped to 0-9 on the road this season.

CU has won eight of the last nine games in the series vs. KSU, including six-straight.

Campbell concludes its four-game home stand on Monday with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against Mercer.
