Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jordan Cramer ran for a school-record 170 yards and four touchdowns and Campbell defeated Morehead State 41-31 Saturday in Pioneer Football League action.
On Senior Day at Barker-Lane Stadium / Ed Gore Field, Cramer surpassed his previous career high (70 yards) by 100 and averaged 9.4 yards per carry. The red-shirt senior from Wake Forest, N.C., scored on runs of 9, 15, 16 and 63 yards to tie the school mark set earlier this year by C.J. Oates against Apprentice.
Oates added 90 rushing yards, while Braden Smith completed 13-of-23 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown.
Campbell (6-3, 5-2 PFL) ran its win streak to five games and clinched winning overall and PFL records for the first time since the program was re-started on the Division I level in 2008. Twenty-nine Camel seniors made their final home appearances in the Orange & Black on Saturday.
Cramer topped the school record 148 yards gained by Carl Smith on Oct. 8 vs. Butler. Harrison Jordan (61 yards), Paul Constantine (45), Preston Dodson (24) and C.J. Oates each had three receptions for the Camels. Jordan extended his streak to 27 games in which the senior has caught at least one pass.
Erik Feliciano had 12 total tackles and Chris Price made 11 stops for the Camel defense.
Campbell capitalized on three Morehead State (2-7, 1-5) first-half turnovers, led 20-3 at intermission, and never trailed while extending its Division I era record win streak to five outings. Morehead dropped its fourth-straight game.
Morehead out-gained the Camels 514-415, but the Camels ran for 276 yards and held a 32:16 to 27:44 advantage in time of possession.
Morehead State quarterback Zach Lewis completed 44-of-68 passes for a career-high 400 yards and four touchdowns. The junior set school records for pass attempts and completions, while his attempts, completions and yardage all stand as season highs in the PFL.
Donte Sawyer finished with 11 receptions for 109 yards and three scores, while Ronnie McDermott had 9 grabs for 106 yards.
Kyle Manley made 17 total tackles – eight solo – while Tony Bachman added 12 tackles for the Eagles.
The Camels rushed for 156 yards in the opening half, including 71 by Cramer, who passed his previous career-high set on Oct. 8 in a 38-23 win over Butler.
The Eagles fumbled the handoff on their second offensive snap and Randel Herring recovered to set up the Camels with a short field at the Eagle 33. Campbell converted seven plays later when Jordan Cramer carried the final 9 yards and Adam Willets' PAT gave the Camels a 7-0 lead with 9:35 remaining in the quarter.
Ranier Duzan's 40-yard field goal drew Morehead within 7-3 with 7:00 left in the opening stanza.
Ted Moore's punt late in the first period hit Morehead's Jordan Hendrix in the back and Hassan Williamson recovered to set up the Camels with a 1st down on the Eagle 46. Four plays later, Cramer ran in from 15 yards out for a 14-3 Camel lead with 14:42 left in the half.
After stopping Morehead on 4th down at the CU 38 with 3:57 left in the half, Campbell reeled off a 9-play, 62-yard drive. Smith ran the final 16 yards on a quarterback keeper and the Camels led 20-3 with 1:05 left in the half.
Morehead took the second half kick-off and drove 74 yards in nine plays to cut the margin to 20-10. The Eagles converted two third-down chances on the drive before Lewis connected with Sawyer on slant pattern for a 14-yard scoring catch.
However, the Camels answered with a 66-yard drive of their own, capped by Cramer's 16-yard run for his third score of the day that put CU ahead 27-10 with 10:51 left in the quarter.
The Eagles again cut the margin to 10 when they drove 60 yards in just 2:22. Lewis hooked up with Adam Slupski on a 4-yard scoring pass with 8:22 to play in the period.
On 4th-down-and-inches at the 37, Cramer broke through the line and ran 63 yards up the middle for his fourth TD of the game. Willets added the PAT and the Camels led 34-17 with 6:12 left in the quarter.
The Camels provided Morehead with a short field when Kurt Odom fumbled on the Camel 28 and Keaton May recovered. Lewis connected with Sawyer on a 16-yard TD grab in the right corner of the end zone and the Eagles again drew within 10 (34-24) with 1:37 to play in the stanza.
Preston Dodson grabbed a 10-yard scoring pass from Braden Smith and the Camels led 41-24 with 9:16 left in the 4th quarter. The Camels drove 58 yards on 8 plays in the series – including a pair of Harrison Jordan receptions that covered 49 yards.
Dodson's scoring grab tied the school Division I era (since 2008) record for TD receptions in a season set by Mike Stryffeler in 2010.
Sawyer's 17-yard TD reception from Lewis with 2:41 to play cut the final margin to 41-31.
Campbell concludes its PFL schedule next week at Valparaiso (0-9, 0-6). The Camels then play Nov. 19 at the Georgia Dome against Georgia State.
Morehead State travels to Davidson next Saturday.
