CREEK, N.C. - Atlantic Sun leader Belmont closed the game on a 16-0
run and defeated Campbell 78-57 Saturday at Gore Arena.
After Preston Dodson's layup brought the Camels within 62-57 with
5:12 remaining, a Belmont offensive rebound and J.J. Mann's 3 with
4:59 to go started the decisive burst.
Belmont made its last 6 shots, including 3-of-3 threes, while the
Camels went 0-of-7 with 3 turnovers during the same span. The
Bruins entered the game outscoring their A-Sun opponents by better
than 19 points per contest.
"We physically hit the wall the last five minutes," said Campbell
head coach Robbie Laing. "Belmont played 12 guys, had more depth.
We're in a conference right now where we don't have a travel
partner. We played Thursday night, Belmont had a week's rest, and
it just took its toll on us."
Ian Clark led Belmont (23-4, 15-1) with 21 points on 8-of-11
shooting, while Drew Hanlen added 13 and Scott Saunders 11.
Belmont's bench outscored the Camel reserves by a 33-7 margin and
the Bruins knocked down 11-of-23 threes (.478), compared to just
1-of-7 from long distance by the Camels.
Eric Griffin led Campbell (11-15, 5-11) with 17 points, 11 rebounds
and 5 blocks. Marvelle Harris added 11 points and 10 boards, while
Preston Dodson collected 8 and 8. Saturday's setback extended
Campbell's losing streak to 5 games - the last 3 coming without the
services of 2nd-leading scorer Lorne Merthie (11.2 points per
game), who is nursing a sore knee.
After shooting 64 percent from the field in the opening half,
Belmont finished the game at 49 percent (26-53) from the floor and
15-of-19 (.789) from the line.
Campbell, which held a 39-30 advantage on the boards, shot 37.9
percent (22-58) from the field and 12-of-17 (.706) from the
stripe. Belmont converted 22 Campbell turnovers into a 30-15
advantage in points off miscues.
"People ooh and ah about Belmont's 3-point shooting, but year-in
and year-out they play the best defense in the league. Their guys
play between 16 to 22 minutes each night and get after it with
great ferocity, said Laing"
The Bruins scored the first 10 points of the game before Campbell
answered with a 12-2 run capped by Keishawn Mayes' jumper with
13:18 to play in the opening half.
Later, Amir Celestin's bucket brought CU within 33-30 with 2:14 to
go in the first period, but Belmont scored 7 unanswered points
before Harris' lay-in cut the gap to 40-32 at the break.
Campbell, which entered the game as the A-Sun leader in blocks
(4.92), swatted 8 Belmont shots for the night, 7 in the second
period.
Jordan Campbell's 3 pushed the Belmont lead to 47-39 with 16:21 to
play, but the visitors went the next 7:01 without a field goal.
Meanwhile, Campbell narrowed the gap to 48-46 on Hartley's jumper
with 12:19 to go that ended a 9-1 rally.
Clark's basket with 8:57 left again stretched the Belmont lead to 9
(48-57). The Camels closed the gap to 59-55 with 7:14 remaining on
Griffin's 3, but could draw no closer down the stretch.
Campbell returns to action Thursday in a 7:15 tip-off at Stetson.
Belmont hosts East Tennessee State Thursday.
