CREEK, N.C. - Big threes from Josh Chavis and Torrey Craig, plus
free throw shooting down the stretch lifted USC Upstate to a 70-64
Atlantic Sun men's basketball win over Campbell Saturday at Gore
Arena.
The Spartans (5-24, 4-15) ended a 5-game losing streak and won for
just the second time in 16 road contests this season. Upstate
knocked down 17-of-20 free throws in the last 4:06 to deal Campbell
(12-18, 6-14) its 3rd-straight loss.
Craig finished with 20 points, including 7-of-8 from the line, and
7 rebounds. Chavis scored 14, including 4-of-7 threes, while Mezie
Uzochukwu added 13 points and 11 boards for the Spartans.
Senior point guard Junard Hartley led the Camels (12-18, 6-14) with
16 points and 8 assists in his final home game. Fellow senior
Preston Dodson added 15 points and 6 rebounds. Eric Griffin
chipped in 14 points and 9 boars, while Amir Celestin added 10,
plus 6 assists for the Camels, who made only 12-of-22 (.545) free
throws, 11-of-20 in the second half.
Upstate finished with a 37-33 edge on the glass and converted 12
offensive rebounds into an 18-10 edge in second-chance points. The
Spartans shot 42.6 percent (20-47) from the field, but hit 8-of-19
threes (.421) and finished 22-of-31 from the line.
Campbell hit 44.6 percent (25-56) of its shots, but only 2-of-9
threes. The Camels played their 7th-straight game without
2nd-leading scorer Lorne Merthie, who is out with a knee
injury.
Upstate closed the first half on a 9-2 run and led 31-21 at the
break. Consecutive threes by Chavis, Craig and Tony Dukes
stretched the Spartan lead to 31-19 before Griffin made a pull-up
jumper just before the horn.
Campbell opened the second period on a 10-2 burst and cut the gap
to 33-31 on Griffin's 3-point play with 15:56 remaining. CU took
its first lead (37-36) on Griffin's dunk with 11:33 to go.
Chavis' 3 broke a 43-43 tie with 7:17 remaining to give the
Spartans the lead for good. Celestin brought the Camels within
47-45 on a pair of foul shots with 5:54 to go, but Chavis answered
on the next possession with his 4th triple of the game to start a
decisive 8-1 run.
The Camels return to action Wednesday in the A-Sun quarterfinal
round against either top-seeded Belmont or second-seeded East
Tennessee State. USC Upstate concludes its season Monday at home
against Florida Gulf Coast (7:30 p.m.).
