NORFOLK, VA. – Campbell's football team (0-1) scored the first points of the game on an opening drive touchdown, but then watched Old Dominion (1-0) put up the next 38 points in a 41-14 loss on Saturday, Sept. 3, in Norfolk, Va. at S.B. Ballard Stadium/Foreman Field in the team's season opener.
Redshirt junior quarterback Braden Smith was 20-for-40 for 172 yards and two touchdowns in the loss for Campbell. The 40 attempts broke the Campbell single game record set by Matt Vollono in 2008. His 20 completions were one off the CU single game record set by Vollono in the same game. Preston Dodson made the transition from the basketball hardwood and led the team with seven catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. ODU's Thomas DeMarco was 29-for-39 for 312 yards and three touchdowns (two passing and one rushing) in the win for the Monarchs. Redshirt defensive lineman Jeremiah Robinson recorded 11 tackles, two sacks and three and half tackles for loss in the game to lead the Campbell defense.
The Camels started the scoring on the team's opening drive. CU marched down the field and scored on a nine-play drive that covered 57 yards in 4:37. The drive was finished on the 15-yard touchdown pass from Braden Smith to Dodson. Adam Willets knocked in the extra point to put the Camels up 7-0. Brandon Chandler took the opening kick out to the 41-yard line to put the Camels in prime field position.Â
The Monarchs matched the Camels and went down the field and scored in six plays, 62 yards in 1:50. The drive was completed on DeMarco's seven-yard touchdown pass to Kai Blanco. The kick from Jarod Brown was good to tie the game at seven all. The big play on the drive was a 43-yard reception by Antonio Vaughn.
ODU took the lead on Campbell just before the end of the first quarter on Angus Harper's 11-yard touchdown rush to cap off an eight play, 47 yard drive that covered 2:54. The extra point from Brown was good to give ODU a 14-7 lead with :37 seconds remaining in the opening period.Â
The Monarchs kept the scoring going and immediately took advantage of a Campbell interception with a DeMarco's 12-yard touchdown rush. The Brown extra point was good to increase the lead to 21-7 ODU with 8:49 remaining in the second quarter.
ODU added another score before the break on DeMarco's third down 34-yard touchdown pass to Vaughn. The made Brown extra point increased the margin to 28-7 with 4:36 remaining in the half. The score was the last until the second half.Â
After stops from both defenses, the Monarchs were able to increase the margin to 24 with Brown's 32-yard field goal with 11:01 remaining in the third quarter. The drive for the score covered five plays, 43 yards in 1:18.
The Camels gave ODU a short field again when the team fumbled away a kick-off on the ensuing drive. The Monarchs again wasted no time put a score on the board and scored on a single play on the 30-yard rush from Vaughn off the reverse. The Brown extra point was good to put ODU up 38-7.Â
CU drew a little closer on Braden Smith's three-yard shovel pass touch to Jordan Cramer. The Willets extra point was good and Campbell trailed 38-14 with 6:53 remaining in the third quarter.
ODU's Jarod Brown got the Monarchs three points back on his 45-yard field goal with 3:57 remaining in the third quarter in what would be the final score of the game.Â
The Camels will now return home to take on Apprentice on Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium/Ed Gore Field.
