SEATTLE, WASH. – Seattle University pulled away in the second half and dealt Campbell a 72-49 loss Saturday night at KeyArena. The Redhawks outscored the Camels 30-6 in a 13:01 span and led by as many as 23. Campbell went 10:02 without making a field goal in the decisive stretch.
Seattle made 13 of its first 20 shots (65%) of the second half to overcome a 2-point deficit. After Darren White converted a 3-point play with 15:42 left to give CU a 41-39 edge, the Camels made only two more shots from the field the rest of the night.
After missing the last 4 games with a hand injury, White led the Camels with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting in 37 minutes. Andrew Ryan added a season-high 11 points – all in the first half – for Campbell (3-9), which shot just 27 percent (6-22) in the second half, 37 percent (19-51) on the night.
Point guard D'Vonne Pickett Jr. led Seattle (5-5) with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Deshaun Sunderhaus added 12 points and 12 boards. Clarence Trent had 12 points and Prince Obasi 10 for the Redhawks, who shot 56 percent (15-27) from the floor in the final period, 48 percent (25-52) on the game.
Seattle entered the game shooting just 58 percent from the line, but made 14-of-17 (.824) on the evening. Campbell made just 6-of-9 from the stripe as the Redhawks were whistled for only 13 fouls all night (6 in the second half).
Seattle finished with a 40-22 advantage on the boards and outscored the smaller Camels 34-14 in the paint. Campbell played without power forward and the Big South's 10th-leading rebounder Marvelle Harris, who suffered a hip injury Wednesday at Gonzaga.
After Obasi gave the Redhawks their largest lead (29-22) of the first half on a 3 with 4:47 left, Campbell closed the period on a 10-1 run. The Camels held Seattle to 0-for-4 shooting and forced 4 turnovers over the final 4:20 of the half.
White started the period-ending burst by making the second of two free throws. Darian Hooker found Ryan on a back-door cut with 3:49 to play; then Hooker hit a pull-up jumper to cut the gap to 29-27. Trey Freeman fed White on the baseline for two that knotted the score with 2:10 remaining. After Seattle's 9th turnover of the half, Ryan canned a 3 from the left corner with 10 seconds to go, giving CU a 32-30 edge at the break.
The Camels return home next Saturday (Dec. 29) for a 1:00 p.m. start against UNC Wilmington.
- Only 4 Camels have played in all 12 games this year, thanks mainly to a rash of injuries. Trey Freeman is the lone CU player to start all 12 outings.
- This week's trip was a homecoming for Campbell sophomore guard Andrew Ryan, who hails from Lynden, Wash., which lies 95 miles north of Seattle and 5 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border. Ryan played his first two years of prep ball at Lynden Christian before transferring to Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Ga.) for his final two seasons.
- Saturday's game marked the farthest distance from home that Campbell has ever played a men's basketball game. Seattle, Wash., and Buies Creek, N.C., are separated by 2881 miles.
