Camels pound out 24 hits in 15-6 series opening win over Longwood

BUIES CREEK – Four different Camels had three-hit nights as Campbell used a seven-run third inning to race past Longwood 15-6 in the series opener Friday night. Jimmy Brenneman, Michael Felton, David Olson and Blake Boyce all finished with three hits for CU, and Campbell improved its winning streak to eleven games.

Longwood struck first, putting together three singles in the first inning and leadoff man Matt Dickason scored when Robby Newman recorded an RBI single to center field. Campbell immediately answered in the bottom half of the frame when Brenneman reached on a single, stole second base, advanced to third on an error and then scored on Felton's RBI single. Felton finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored, raising his team-best batting average to .500.

The third inning proved to be the decisive frame as Campbell pushed across seven runs. Brent Graham led off the inning with a double to left center and concluded the barrage with his RBI single that scored Kyle Holmstrom. Six Camels recorded hits in between Graham's at-bats, including a two-RBI double from Boyce as CU chased Longwood starter Cory Ramsey from the game. Ramsey took the loss, surrendering 11 hits and eight runs in 2.2 innings.

Matt Sergey (2-0) got the win for the Camels, tossing 7.0 innings and scattering eight hits and two runs, striking out ten Lancer batters while walking none. Michael Griffin and Brandon Wilson tossed one inning each to close out the game for Campbell.

Brenneman scored three runs for the black and orange, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Boyce finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk as the Camels improved their collective batting average to .344, tops in the Big South Conference.

Campbell improves to 16-3 on the year, while Longwood drops to 11-7. The Camels will try to tie and possibly break the CU program record of 12 consecutive wins tomorrow when the two clubs meet for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
