BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Trey Freeman (17) and Darian Hooker (15) combined for 32 points and Campbell held off Radford 69-60 Wednesday night in Big South Conference action at Gore Arena.
Campbell (10-10, 5-1) won its seventh game in the last eight outings despite letting a 17-point advantage slip away. Radford (9-11, 3-3) scored 14-straight points early in the second period and took its only lead of the night (44-43) on a pair of free throws by Javonte Green with 12:24 left in the game.
However, the Camels answered with an 18-7 burst and hit 4 free throws down the stretch to earn their second-straight triumph overall and move a game in front of VMI (4-2) and High Point (4-2) in the North Division standings.
Freeman hit 7-of-16 shots and dealt 4 assists, while Hooker made 6-of-9 from the floor, 3-of-4 from the line, had 3 assists and 3 steals. Four days after Campbell finished with 0 bench points in a 63-59 victory over Winthrop, the Camel reserves outscored Radford's 24-9.
R.J. Price led Radford with 22 points, including 5-of-11 treys, and hit three-straight triples early in the final period as the Highlanders recovered from a 35-20 deficit at intermission. Green chipped in 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting and a game-high 8 rebounds, while Rashun Davis dealt 8 assists with 0 turnovers and 3 steals in 29 minutes.
Radford hit its first 7 shots of the second period, including a trio of threes by Price. The Highlanders drew within 39-38 on Blake Smith's jumper from the left wing to cap a 14-0 run with 14:22 remaining.
After Radford took its only advantage thanks to a 24-6 rally, Freeman hit a jumper, followed by a triple on the next two Camel possessions. Radford cut the edge to 55-51 with 7:51 to play after Price made two from the stripe, but the Highlanders went 4:40 without a field goal and CU stretched the gap to 61-51 with 5:15 to go.
RU pulled within 5 late (65-60) on Brandon Holcomb's dunk, but Price missed a trey and Hooker and Freeman both converted one-and-ones in the last 17 seconds.
CU made 29-of-59 shots (49.2 percent) on the night and converted 8-of-11 from the line. Radford hit 10 of its first 14 attempts in the final period, but only 4 of its last 14 and finished the evening at 41 percent (23-56) from the field. Radford hit 5-of-20 from 3-point distance and made 9-of-16 free throws (.563).
Campbell closed the first half on a 23-8 run and led 35-20 at the break. After R.J. Price pulled the Highlanders even at 12 on a pull-up jumper with 10:27 to go in the half, CU scored 9-straight points.
The Camels shot 48.6 percent (17-35) from the floor in the opening half, while limiting the Highlanders to 32 percent (9-28) shooting. CU held an 11-2 edge in points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.
The Camels travel to Coastal Carolina for a 7 p.m. tip on Saturday.
