Charlotte tops football in opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte began its 2013 season and its program with a 52-7 win over visiting Campbell Saturday at Richardson Stadium in the 49ers inaugural game.

Charlotte begins 2013 1-0 with the win, while Campbell falls to 0-1. The game was the first for both head coaches, CU's Mike Minter and the 49ers' Brad Lambert.

The 49ers totaled 488 yards of total offense with 277 passing and 211 on the ground, limiting the Camels to 287 total yards.

UNCC's Matt Johnson passed for 282 yards on 19-of-29 passing with three touchdowns, spread around eight receivers. Mikel Hunter hauled in five catches for 80 yards, while Austin Duke grabbed a touchdown pass and 66 yards on five catches. Trent Bostick also collected 83 yards receiving with a score.

Kalif Phillips led the 49er rushing attack with 66 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, while Alan Barnwell pitched in 55 yards, including a long of 23, on nine attemps.

Micah Bryan led all tacklers with eight stops, while Mark Hogan added six with an interception and a tackle for loss.

Freshman Keith Goss posted 56 yards rushing on 10 carries for the Camels, while senior Kurt Odom totaled 45 on seven tries. Dakota Wolf netted 26 yards with a touchdown on the ground, adding 68 passing on 10-of-14. Brian Hudson added 30 yards rushing and 33 passing on 6-of-12 attempts.

Jabri Ridenhour caught a team-best five passes for 44 yards for the Camels.

Luke Hill paced the CU defense with six tackles, while Brandon Stegall tacked on five tackles, including one for loss, with two breakups. Lucas Smith and Matt Farris also posted five stops apiece, combining for three tackles for loss.

Charlotte scored on the game's second play when Mark Hogan returned a Brian Hudson interception for a 32-yard score. Matt Johnson added two touchdown drives for the 49ers, completing to Justin Bolus and Austin Duke in the first quarter.

After a Blake Brewer field goal and a Kalif Phillips touchdown run, Campbell mounted a 14-play, 85-yard drive, capped off by Dakota Wolf's one-yard punch-in to make the score 32-7 UNCC with 7:24 remaining in the first half.

Charlotte led 38-7 at the break before adding a touchdown apiece in the third and fourth quarters. Brewer's 40-yard field goal in the third made the final 52-7.

The Camels will make their home debut next week, Sept. 7 at Barker-Lane Stadium, taking on UVa.Wise at 6 p.m. The contest will be the first of six home games for CU in 2013.
