COLUMBIA, S.C. – Wil Crowe's complete game shutout led top-seeded South Carolina past fourth-seed Campbell 9-0 Sunday in game five of the NCAA Columbia Regional at Carolina Stadium.
South Carolina improves to 44-17 with the win, advancing to play No. 2 seed Maryland tonight at 7 p.m. The Terrapins are 2-0 in the Regional, opening with a 4-3 win over Old Dominion before topping host South Carolina 4-3 Saturday.
Campbell finishes 2014 at 41-21, tying for the program's second-most wins in a single season. CU has won 131 games over the last three years, recording the school's first three 40-win seasons over that time.
The Camels earned their first-ever NCAA Regional win on Saturday with a 4-1 12-inning victory over Old Dominion.
Crowe (8-3) allowed four hits with four strikeouts while going the distance. He did not walk a batter.
Ryan Koopman (8-2) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on four hits with three walks in three innings.
Bobby Thorson pitched 5 1/3 with five runs on seven hits, striking out and walking one. Thorson retired 13 of 15 from the end of the fourth into the ninth. Coley Thompkins allowed two hits with a strikeout and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.
The Gamecocks broke through in the third, starting with a two-out double from Max Schrock for the game's first hit. Joey Pankake singled him in to give USC a 1-0 lead.
South Carolina plated four in the fourth on four hits, including Schrock's two-run double to make it 5-0.
After four scoreless frames, the Gamecocks tacked on four more in the top of the ninth, posting five-straight one-out hits, giving USC a 9-0 advantage.
Campbell stranded two in the first. With the Camels' first two leadoff men reaching in the sixth, the rally was spoiled with a double play.
Matt Parrish singled to right with two outs in the ninth, but a pop out ended the game.
Schrock went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI, while Pankake also added two RBI on a pair of hits in the win. Tanner English scored twice, going 2-for-4.
Campbell's top four in the order accounted for all four of its hits on the day.
