BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell started the game on a 29-2 run and went on to defeat Montreat 87-42 Friday night in the Camels' season-opener at Gore Arena.
Kyre' Hamer scored 21 points, freshman Chris Clemons had 19 in 18 minutes and Curtis Phillips chipped in 14 for the Camels, who led 29-2 before the NAIA member Cavaliers connected from the field.
Rod Days added nine points and D.J. Mason had 10 rebounds and five assists for the Camels, who won improved to 8-0 in home openers at Gore Arena.
The Camels hit 58 percent from the floor in the opening half, led by as many as 48, and went on to post their second-largest margin of victory (45 points) in Gore Arena, which opened in 2008.
Amir Davis led Montreat (1-3) with 11 points and Frank Swift had 10 for the Cavaliers, who shot just 22.8 percent (13-57) overall and committed 21 turnovers.
Hamer made 6-of-7 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the line in 24 minutes for Campbell, which led 54-19 at the break. Clemons hit all six of his first-half shots and had 16 points in just 11 minutes before the break. The freshman from Raleigh made four threes and added four rebounds and two steals in the opening period.
Phillips scored 12 first-half points and Hamer had 11 for the Camels, who held an 18-3 edge in points off turnovers and limited Montreat to just 5-of-25 shooting before intermission.
The Camels took their largest lead of the night (79-31) with 7:02 left in the contest on Andrew Eudy's cut to the basket off Shane Whitfield's assist. However, head coach Kevin McGeehan substituted liberally with all 15 players in uniform seeing action and no one playing more than 23 minutes.
Campbell finished the night shooting 46 percent from the field, made 13-of-33 threes (.394) and 16-of-26 from the stripe (.615). The Camels finished with a 31-8 advantage in points off turnovers and a 16-2 edge in fast break points.
CU returns to action Monday in a 7:00 p.m. start at Savannah State.
