Brett McLamb earned a place on the 2017 Big South Conference all-freshman team after finishing 11th at the league championship last April. The former Triton High School baseball standout ranked 20th in the conference with a 74.3 stroke average over 23 rounds and earned a sixth-place finish at the Border Olympics to help the Camels win the team title. McLamb capped his red-shirt freshman season with a tie for 37th at the NCAA West Lafayette Regional where he shot 79-74-73--226 on the Pete Dye-designed Kampen Course.
Favorite professional: Dustin Johnson
Favorite athlete outside of golf: Clayton Kershaw
Favorite course I've played: Grandfather Mountain (N.C.) Golf Club
Toughest course I've played: Purdue University's Kampen Course (2017 NCAA West Lafayette Regional).
All-time low round: 63 at Keith Hills Country Club and in second round of 2017 Eastern Amateur at Elizabeth Manor G&CC.
Best shot ever hit: At the NCAA Regional this year, Coach Moot and I were on the par-five 7th hole on the last day and had about 285 yards to the stick into a stout 35 mph wind. I pulled out 3-wood and from what he thought I was aiming for the left edge of the green short. Little did he know I was taking dead aim for the stick that yielded deadly trouble short of the green. From there I hit the best 3-wood of my life to around 6 feet and continued to make the eagle. Coach Moot would agree we had a couple shots that round that could arguably be my best of all time.
Best part of my game: Chicks dig the long ball.
I need to improve on: The game definitely needs to improve around and on the greens. The flat stick is my enemy.
My best club: Between my driver and 2-iron. Both of them feel typically deliver for me more times than not.
Most influence in my golf playing career: My grandfather, Jerry Smith (former Campbell University Golf Coach). Whether it's from teeing up golf balls for me in the back yard at 3 years old and nailing his brand new Z71 pickup truck parked on the side or now in college on the range at Keith Hills and him telling me something's off and we fix it. He's been there through it all.
My dream foursome: It would have to be the iconic Tiger Woods, the people's favorite Jack Nicklaus and the legendary "John Crooks" I've heard so many stories about. From what I've heard I want to be Coach's partner in that match.
