Camels head to Tar Heel Intercollegiate

Camels one of nine top-100 ranked teams in field

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Coming off back-to-back first-place finishes, Campbell will compete in this weekend in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, hosted by North Carolina and UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill.

Campbell finished as co-champion at the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate Mar. 27-29, sharing the title with CAA rival Elon at 9-under par (276-297-282—855).  Joachim Larsen Tegner was the individual runner-up at 7-under, Erik Johansson (-6) finished T3 and Benjamin Killingstad (-1) was 11th at Cutter Creek.

The Camels also won the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Mar. 9-10 at 10-under par (278-277-275—830), thanks in part to Killingstad's runner-up showing.

Nine programs – including No. 100 Campbell – in the 15-team Tar Heel Intercollegiate field are ranked among the nation's top 100.  Host and No. 11 UNC, Duke (27), Texas A&M (29) and UNCW (42) are rated in the top 50.

Since the start of the semester, head coach Matt Moot's team has climbed 42 places in the Scoreboard.clippd.com rankings.  CU finished third at the Sam Ryder Intercollegiate in Feb. at LPGA International before its consecutive team titles.

Four players who helped the Camels finish seventh in last year's Tar Heel Intercollegiate will be in this weekend's lineup.  Larsen Tegner finished T22 (72-74-69—215, +5) last season at Finley GC, Johansson was T36 (71-74-72—217, +7) and Killingstad (75-72-70—217, +7) tied for 36th, and Logan Graf (76-72-73—221, +11) was T55.  Freshman William Sundborn will complete the Campbell lineup for Saturday's 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.

Dating to the fall semester, Campbell has finished among the top three teams in five of its last six tournaments.

Campbell will be paired with UCF, FAU and Kennesaw State for Saturday's first two rounds.  The 54-hole event concludes on Sunday on the par 70 Love Golf redesign.

The Course: Finley Golf Club (Par 70, 7084 Yards)
Following a year-long renovation and overhaul, UNC's Finley Golf Club reopened in October 2023.  The design changes were engineered by Love Golf Design and its founder, former Tar Heel Davis Love III (1982-86), company president Mark Love, also a Carolina graduate (1988) and former Tar Heel golfer, and lead architect Scot Sherman. Dating to 1950, the original George Cobb design has undergone numerous changes through the years.  In 1999, Tom Fazio re-designed the entire course.  Under Love's direction, the greens have been redesigned and recontoured and are planted with Tif-Eagle Bermuda. About 16 acres of ground previously occupied by the 10th and 11th holes have been converted into a practice area.  The nines have been reversed, the primary reason being the Loves believe the previous ninth hole, a par 4 with a water hazard to the right of the green, will be a better finishing hole. The previous 12th hole, a par 3, is now the starting hole. The Love brothers talk of their affection for having "quirks" on a golf course, and the new opening hole fits that theme. The course has five par 3s and three par 5s. The par-70 layout plays up to 7,084 yards from the back tees.

The Coach: After spending seven seasons as assistant and associate head coach, Matt Moot is in his first year as head coach at his alma mater. He collected his first collegiate coaching victory in his seventh team event – the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate (Mar. 9-10, 2026) and followed that with a first-place finish at the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate (Mar. 27-29).  During his time as an assistant or associate on the Camel staff, Moot has helped lead Campbell to five NCAA post-season trips, 12 tournament titles and three conference crowns.  Moot helped develop the 2017, 2019 (Jesper Svensson), 2018 (Ray Kraivixien) and 2021 (Pontus Nyholm) Big South Conference golfers of the year as well as four-straight league rookies of the year in Henric Bjelke (2022), Tim Holmberg (2023), Erik Johansson (CAA 2024) and Benjamin Killingstad (CAA 2025).  During his playing career (2007-11) at Campbell, Moot compiled 11 top-10 individual finishes and was a two-time Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.  He competed in the 2009 and 2011 NCAA regionals.
