LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Campbell men and women are both in second place after day one of the Big South Indoor Championship at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex on Friday. The men's squad notched 50 points on day one and trails host Liberty by two points, while the women recorded 36 points and trail the Flames by 41 points.
The Orange and Black picked up four conference titles on Friday, including
Sabina Allen in the long jump,
Amon Kemboi in the 5000m,
Shanley Koekemoer in the 5000m and the men's distance medley squad. In addition,
Ronald Cheserek (5000m) and the women's DMR squad took home all-conference accolades.
Allen set a new school and conference record with a best mark of 6.18m in the long jump. She broke her own program record of 5.98m, which she set at the Don Kirby Invitational on Feb. 10. The Spanish Town, Jamaica, native now has eight conference titles to her name, including the last four long jump championships.
Kemboi set a new facility record in the 5000m with a time of 14:22.51 to claim his third career conference title. Fellow Camel
Ronald Cheserek was the next competitor to cross the line, clocking in at 14:43.63 to earn all-conference accolades.
Koekoemer picked up 10 points for the Camels after clocking in at 17:19.81 in the 5000m to earn her first career conference title. She beat out Liberty's Noel Palmer by two seconds to claim the title.
Joan Maritim just missed out on all-conference honors in the event, crossing the finish line in a time of 17:44.08 to finish fourth.
The men's DMR squad, which consisted of
Kelvin Kirui,
Trevon Compito,
Graeme Fisher and
Lawrence Kipkoech, captured the conference title with a time of 9:58.76. This was a twenty second improvement from CU's season best time of 10:18.68, which was set at the Camel City Invitational on Feb. 3.
On the women's side, Campbell earned all-conference honors after finishing in second place with a time of 12:16.17. The Camel relay consisted of
Roshae Jackson,
Faith Lee,
Lize Botha and
Madeline Fitch.
Eleven Camels qualified for tomorrow's finals by finishing within the top-8 in Friday's preliminary round. These athletes will compete in nine different events starting at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
Campbell's qualifiers on the men's side include:
Khai McLin and
Samuel Adams in the 60m and 200m,
Collin Cooper in the 400m,
Graeme Fisher and
Kelvin Kirui in the 800m and Chigozie Ataviwgho in the 60m hurdles. On the women's side, Allen,
Isis Brooks and
Deonica Reid qualified for the 60m, Brooks and
Avonti Holt advanced to the 200m finals, Holt qualified for the 400m and
Roshae Jackson advanced to the 800m finals.
