Men and women finish second at Big South meet

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Campbell track & field men and women's squad both finished as the runner-up at the Big South Indoor Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.

The men's squad finished with 116.5 points, while the women recorded 99.5 points to beat out third place High Point by one point. Liberty won the conference title on both the men's and women's side.

This is the second consecutive year in which the Camels have finished in second place at the indoor conference meet. Last year, the men notched 170 points, while the women record 174 points, as both squads were the runner-up to Liberty.

"It was definitely one of the more exciting championships that I've been a part of," said head coach Michael Kelly. "The women were in a battle for second place all weekend with High Point. Fortunately, everyone did what they were supposed to do and we were able to edge them out for second place by one point."

Kelly continued, "Sabina led the charge for the women. Her performances were literally showstopping. I can't wait to see her do it again at nationals in two weeks. For the men, Amon and Lawrence really racked up the points for us and showed us why they are headed to nationals. Overall, there were so many solid performances by our athletes. It was an awesome team effort this weekend."

Campbell senior Sabina Allen was named the Most Outstanding Women's Field Performer after claiming three conference titles in the long jump, triple jump and 60m. Sophomores Collin Cooper and Michaela Louw were named to the All-Academic Team for the Fighting Camels.

The Camels picked up four individual titles on Saturday to bring the total up to eight across the entire weekend. In addition, Campbell picked up 16 all-conference accolades over the course of the meet.

Allen started off her day in the triple jump, where she captured the gold medal with a best jump of 13.44m. This mark broke her own school and conference record, which she set at the Clemson Orange and Purple Invite on Jan. 6. Her lifetime best mark of 13.44m is currently ranked sixth in the nation this season.

The Spanish Town, Jamaica, native followed up with a conference title in the 60m to bring her weekend total to three. She ran a personal best time of 7.58s to capture the gold medal over Charleston Southern's Diamond Rush by 0.04s. Allen's time is just 0.05s off of the program record, which was set by Anna Scott in 2014.

Amon Kemboi also won three conference titles for the Fighting Camels in Lynchburg, including the mile, 3000m and 5000m. He competed in the latter two on Saturday to capture a key 20 points for the men's squad.

In the mile, Kemboi broke the school record after clocking in at 4:06.16 to claim the conference title. He had a lifetime best performance to break Lawrence Kipkoech's record of 4:06.34, which he set at the Keydet Invitational on Jan. 20. Kipkoech followed closely behind in second place with a time of 4:06.56 to claim all-conference honors.

The duo also went 1-2 in the 3000m on Saturday afternoon, with Kemboi edging out Kipkoech by two-tenths of a second to claim the conference title. Kemboi clocked in at 8:13.15 to earn a first place finish and Kipkoech followed in second with a time of 8:13.36 to pick up all-conference accolades.

Khai McLin picked up two all-conference honors on Saturday after placing second in the 200m and third in the 60m. The Plantation, Fla., native ran a time of 21.53s in the 200m and a 6.93s in the 60m for the Camels.

Shanley Koekemoer placed second in the 3000m with a time of 9:53.03 to earn all-conference honors for the second time of the weekend. Joan Maritim and Michaela Louw just missed out on the podium, placing fifth and sixth, respectively.

After finishing as the top qualifier in the 800m prelims, Roshae Jackson earned all-conference accolades with a third place finish in the finals of the event. She ran a season best time of 2:12.24, which is just .56s off of her own school record in the event.

This marks the end of the 2017-18 indoor season for the Camels, except for Sabina Allen, Amon Kemboi and Lawrence Kipkoech, who are all in line to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The meet is slated for March 9-10 in College Station, Texas.

Allen is ranked sixth in the nation in the triple jump, Kemboi is 13th in the 5000m and Kipkoech currently sits sixth in the 5000m and 13th in the 3000m.

The rest of the team will begin preparations for the outdoor season, which is set to begin on March 9-10 at the UNCW Seahawk Invite in Wilmington, N.C. For the latest information on Campbell track & field, make sure to follow @GoCamelsRun on Twitter.
