AMES, Iowa / ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Lawrence Kipkoech set a program record in the 5000m invitational on day one of competition at the Iowa State Classic, while
Sabina Allen broke the school record in the long jump at the Don Kirby Invitational.
Kipkoech ran a program-best time of 13:41.17 to break
Amon Terer's record of 13:42.78, which he set at the same meet in 2017. He is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation and is primed to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, as the top-16 qualify for the meet.
The Eldoret, Kenya, native's time is the third best time in the history of the Big South, only behind Sam Chelanga (13:19.79) and Josh McDougal (13:37.32) of Liberty. This is his third school record in the last three weeks, as he previously set records in the mile and 3000m.
Allen recorded a career-best jump of 5.98m in the long jump to break Silvienne Krosendijk's record of 5.89m, which she set during the 2008 season. The Spanish Town, Jamaica, native now owns four school records, including the indoor and outdoor long jump and triple jump.
DISTANCE
Kipkoech and
Amon Kemboi ran against some of the top distance runners in the nation in the invitational heat of the 5000m on Friday afternoon. Kipkoech's time surpassed his previous PR in the event (13:53.97) by more than 10 seconds to place fifth. Kemboi ran a lifetime best of 13:43.78 to finish in eighth place.
In her first collegiate 5000m race,
Shanley Koekemoer clocked in at 17:09.60 to finish in 17th place among all competitors. That time is the best in the Big South thus far in 2017-18 by more than a minute.
"We had a great day for our three 5K athletes at Iowa State," said head coach
Michael Kelly. "Shanley ran a great time for her 5K debut. Amon and Lawrence showed that they are ready and able to compete with the best in the country."
JUMPS
Allen jumped 5.98m in her final attempt on Friday to finish in third place at the Albuquerque Convention Center. This mark is currently ranked first in the Big South thus far in the 2017-18 indoor season and is the second best jump in conference history, only behind Coastal Carolina's Chasity Johnson (6.10m).
Darius Prescott competed in the high jump on day one in New Mexico on Friday, clearing the 1.87m bar to finish in 20th place among an elite group of jumpers.
"This type of meet is a great experience for our kids, as they have an opportunity to compete against some of the best in the NCAA," said jumps coach
