Lacrosse opens Big South slate at GWU

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell opens Big South play Saturday, March 31 at Gardner-Webb. Opening draw is set for 2 p.m. at Spangler Stadium.

The Camels (4-6) finished nonconference action with a thrilling 13-12 victory over Furman last week, taking the win on Melissa Placek's put-back with 1.6 seconds on the clock.

Placek's goal came after Furman tied it up at 12-12 with 43 seconds remaining in regulation. After a Campbell timeout, Placek's first attempt was saved, but the junior collected the deflection and batted in the game-winner. The goal was Placek's third of the day, marking her sixth hat trick of the season and third straight. She added eight draw controls in the win. Placek owns team highs of 31 goals and 34 points this season, tacking on 49 draw controls.

Sydney Etheridge, who was named the Big South's Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, gathered a season-high 13 saves in the win, adding a ground ball, while Megan Reilly collected two ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Kayla Reilly, who stands two assists shy of becoming Campbell's first player to 100 career goals, assists and ground balls, owns 29 points on 13 goals and 16 helpers this season. Annie Pazulski adds 19 assists and eight goals for 27 points, while Mackenzie Koeller tacks on 20 goals for the Camels.

Etheridge has collected 54 saves in goal, while Megan Reilly has recorded 25 ground balls and caused 14 turnovers.

Gardner-Webb (2-8) is coming off an 18-8 setback at Coastal Carolina. The Runnin' Bulldogs are 0-5 at home this season. Amanda Steinmuller paces GWU on the season with 41 points on 26 goals and 15 assists. Monique Martin has tallied 30 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers.

Campbell is 3-0 all-time against the Runnin' Bulldogs, outscoring GWU 62-25 in those meetings. The Camels topped Gardner-Webb 22-6 last season in Buies Creek.
