CU opens Big South play vs. Gardner-Webb

Camels host Bulldogs in Saturday DH

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell opens Big South Conference play Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. tip-off vs. in-state rival Gardner-Webb at Gore Arena.

The Camels (7-7) are coming off a 95-48 win over NAIA member Allen Wednesday. Gardner-Webb (10-5) brings an 8-game win streak to Buies Creek, most recently a 73-69 victory last Saturday at Wake Forest.

Campbell's non-conference schedule included a Jamaica Classic Rose Hall division title after wins over Florida A&M and Austin Peay, plus a season-opening victory over UNC Wilmington (97-73 OT).  The Camels suffered narrow losses at power conference members Georgetown (93-85) and Miami (73-62).

Gardner-Webb (10-5) also claimed a win over UNCW (81-72) during its 2-5 start.  The Runnin' Bulldogs' current win stretch also includes a 79-69 victory at Georgia Tech on Dec.17.
  • Chris Clemons now stands 28th on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list with 2,645 points in 111 career outings.  He leads the nation in scoring (29.5 ppg) and has extended his double-figure scoring streak to 96 games, the longest among all active players and 4th-best in D1 history.
  • Senior C Andrew Eudy is second on the team in scoring (9.9), while leading the team in assists (45). He posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds at Miami.
  • ESPNU has selected the Winthrop at Campbell game on Thursday, Jan. 10 as its first Big South Wildcard broadcast of 2018-19.
  • GWU red-shirt senior G David Efianayi ranks 6th in the Big South Conference in scoring (16.7), while wing Jose Perez is the top-scoring freshman in the league at 16.6 points per game (7th overall).  Senior F DJ Laster leads the league in field goal percentage (.551), is 17th in scoring (13.1) and 16th in rebounding (5.4).
  • Last year Campbell and Gardner-Webb split a pair of games with each winning on the other's home floor.  After losing in its first four trips to Gore Arena, Gardner-Webb has won its last four games against Campbell in Buies Creek, including a 79-69 victory in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Big South Championship.
  • GWU claimed an 82-80 win over the Camels on Jan. 3, 2018 at Buies Creek, while Campbell won 78-70 last Feb. 7 at Boiling Springs.  At Gore Arena, David Efianayi tied his career high with 31 points, 26 after halftime, and Gardner-Webb rallied to defeat Campbell 82-80 in overtime.  CU led by 12 with less than 7 minutes remaining before the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run. In Boiling Springs, a late 11-0 run propelled Campbell to a 78-70 victory.  Chris Clemons became the first junior in Big South Conference history to pass the 2,000 career point barrier, during a 33-point outing. Freshman Jordan Whitfield came off the Camel bench to score a career-high 12.
  • Over the last six seasons, Gardner-Webb has five wins over Power 5 Conference schools - Clemson, Purdue, Nebraska, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.
  • Chris Clemons was held to a career-low 9 points in Campbell's 71-68 loss on Jan. 6, 2016 in Boiling Springs.  However, the Big South pre-season player of the year has reached double digits in each outing since - a streak of 96 games - longest in NCAA Division I.
