Camels host Winthrop Thursday on ESPNU

Two of nation's top 3-point shooting teams meet

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Coming off a win over Gardner-Webb in its Big South opener, Campbell hosts Winthrop Thursday at 7 p.m. in a battle that will air on ESPNU.

The Camels (8-7, 1-0) rode a 19-2 run midway through the second half Saturday to defeat Gardner-Webb 72-61 at Gore Arena.  CU committed a season-low six turnovers - just one in the final period.  Chris Clemons scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the final 14:03 of play, while Jordan Whitfield came off the bench to add a career-high 13.  Andrew Eudy chipped in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, plus 5 assists.

With starting guards Nych Smith (16.0 ppg)  and Bjorn Broman (10.2) sidelined with ankle injuries, Winthrop (9-5, 1-0) trailed 31-19 at UNC Asheville in Saturday's Big South opener, but hit 11 threes after the break and outscored the hosts 61-34 in the final period en route to an 80-65 triumph.  Austin Awad led five Eagles in double figures with 19 points, including 6-of-9 from 3-point distance.

Campbell stands 13th nationally in 3-point FG attempted (438) and Winthrop in 8th.  The Eagles rate second in the country in 3s made per game (12.8), seventh in scoring (88.7).

  • Chris Clemons now stands 25th on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list with 2,672 points in 112 career outings.  He leads the nation in scoring (29.3 ppg) and has extended his double-figure scoring streak to 97 games, the longest among all active players and 4th-best in D1 history.
  • Since re-joining the Big South in 2011-12, Campbell is 4-2 against Winthrop at Gore Arena, including last year's 88-77 victory in Buies Creek.
  • The team that has led at half-time has won the last seven meetings between the Camels and Eagles.
  • Thursday's game is the only scheduled meeting between Campbell and Winthrop in the regular season.  The Camels face Gardner-Webb (W 72-61), Winthrop (Jan. 10), UNC Asheville (Jan. 16) and Charleston Southern (Jan. 19) only once in the 16-game, unbalanced Big South slate.  CU will meet Presbyterian, Hampton, Radford, Longwood, High Point and USC Upstate on a home-and-home basis.
  • Winthrop is 4-4 on the road this year with wins at UNC Asheville (80-65), Southern Illinois (79-71), Tennessee Tech (82-70) and SIUE (94-82). Winthrop's road losses have come at Vanderbilt (92-79), Kentucky (87-74), Davidson (99-81) and Florida State (87-76).
  • The Eagles stand 14-5 in Big South regular season road games in the last 3 seasons, including Saturday's win at Asheville.
  • Five Winthrop players are scoring in double figures - Nych Smith (16.0), Adam Pickett (12.2), Josh Ferguson (11.8), Kyle Zunic (10.7) and Bjorn Broman (10.2).
  • The Camels and Eagles split two games last season with each winning on its home floor.
  • Campbell and Winthrop met in the 2017 Big South Championship final at Rock Hill, S.C., where the Eagles won the league title on their home floor.
