Describe Campbell baseball in three words.
Family, Brotherhood, Culture
What does Campbell baseball mean to you?
Campbell baseball is in my DNA and has been an important part of my life for over 35 years. To see the program grow into what it is now has been one of the great blessings in my life. Our family is honored to be a part of it.
How did your time as a student-athlete at Campbell prepare you for your career and life after college?
It taught me balance in my life, and that in each important area of your life preparing and attention to detail will set you apart from most people. Â
What originally attracted you to attend Campbell a student-athlete?
My father graduated from Campbell, and I also attended basketball camp there many times. It has always felt like home to me. Then coach [Calvin] Koonce came to see me pitch five times my senior year at West Brunswick and always spent time with me after each of those games. That made a big impression on me as a young person, and I knew then it was where I was supposed to be.
What are some of the most memorable moments from your time as a student-athlete at Campbell?
Being a part of the five home run game by Henry [Rochelle] my freshman year. Stopping at the state line on our first visit south each year to have the freshmen sing. All those long practices and rushing to Marshbanks to eat before they closed at 6 p.m. Getting Pizza Inn on Wednesday nights as a treat for $5. Winning our first Big South Championship our senior year on Coastal Carolina's field.
Describe your career path.
I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. I have been involved in our family insurance agency, Coastal Insurance, for 31 years now. I have always enjoyed building people and helping them achieve their goals in life and in other businesses that I have owned over the years. I also own a restaurant in the Wilmington area and am part owner of an IT company based in Atlanta called Sports Challenge Network. We have a real shot at revolutionizing the bowling industry with X-Bowling. Â
What is your greatest professional accomplishment?
Serving as Chairmen of the Board of our state association IIANC and also receiving the Bernard J. Burns InsurPac award for political advocacy from our national association IIABA.
What was the most important thing you learned while you were at Campbell?
That if you honor God, he will direct your path and that the more individuals you help to have a better life the more you will be blessed.
What advice would you give to current student-athletes at Campbell?
Work hard, enjoy the process, smile and make friends everywhere you go. Life is a big network, and you never know when you can help someone or when they will be willing to help you.
