PALM HARBOR, FLA. –
Pontus Nyholm won individual honors and Campbell finished as runner-up in the team standings after Tuesday's final round of the Intercollegiate at Innisbrook.
On the par-71, 7209-yard Copperhead Course, which also hosts the PGA TOUR Valspar Championship, Nyholm matched his career-best 54-hole score (204) with rounds of 67-68-69. The junior from Gavle, Sweden led the field in par-5 scoring (-9) and collected his third top-four individual finish in four outings this fall.
Ranked No.-98 in the latest Golfstat ratings, Nyholm earned a two-shot victory over runner-up Isaiah Jackson of Memphis (70-65-71—206) to earn his first collegiate title after four second-place finishes in his first two collegiate seasons.
Max Theodorakis (75-69-69—213) tied for seventh individually, while
Josh Hetherington was 12th (68-71-75--214) for the Camels, who finished second, second, tied for first and second in their four fall events.
On Tuesday, the Camels finished ahead of four teams ranked among the nation's top 50 – No.-39 South Florida, No.-49 Memphis, No.-28 Houston and No.-16 UCF. Only a pair of late birdies from James Madison (286-276-282--844) kept the Camels from a second-straight first-place finish.
"We had a great tournament and played extremely well this week, and it came down to the final hole where the young man from JMU made a 30-foot birdie putt," said Campbell head coach
John Crooks. "Pontus had a great event to win his first collegiate tournament. This group is special."
The defending Big South Conference champion Camels return to action next February at the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
