BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Four players from the Campbell University Big South Conference regular season co-championship men's tennis team have received league post-season honors.
Â
Dustin Werner was named Big South scholar-athlete of the year as well as first-team all-conference in singles and doubles. Â
Raphael Calzi was a first-team all-league honoree in doubles.
Bastien Huon gained second-team all-conference singles and doubles recognition.
Ondrej Labik was a second-team all-league doubles choice.
Â
The defending Big South champion Camels (14-5, 7-1) take the second seed into Thursday's league tournament quarterfinal against seventh-seeded Winthrop (7-12, 2-6) at Radford, Va. Campbell and Gardner-Webb shared the league regular season title, but the Runnin' Bulldogs earned the top seed based on a dual match victory last month at Boiling Springs.
Â
A 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Werner repeated as Big South scholar-athlete of the year. A two-time first-team Academic All-District (CoSIDA) honoree, Werner earned first-team all-conference in singles and doubles as well as Big South all-academic team recognition for the third-consecutive season. This season, he has posted an 18-13 record in singles play and 17-10 in doubles in 2018-19 (11-7 at No.-1 singles, 12-5 at No.-1 doubles).
Â
Werner, a senior from Reutlingen, Germany, owns a 4.0 grade-point average as a double major in economics and business administration.
Â
Calzi, a junior transfer from Mondercange, Luxembourg, paired with Werner to post a 12-5 record at the top doubles position, including a 5-2 mark in Big South Conference play. In addition, he owns a 17-4 overall mark in singles, including a 6-2 record against Big South foes.
Â
Huon, a junior from Redene, France, leads Campbell with a 24-13 overall singles record, including a 14-4 ledger in dual matches and 6-2 record in conference play. He teamed with Labik, a junior from Liberec, Czech Republic, to finish 16-4 in doubles, 7-2 vs. Big South opponents. The tandem carries an 8-match win streak into Thursday's Big South quarterfinal.
Â
Campbell defeated Winthrop 5-2 on Mar. 29 at Buies Creek in a rematch of last year's Big South final. The Camels enter the Big South championship as winners in seven of their last eight and 13 of their last 15 matches.
