Barefoot earns ABCA Atlantic All-Region honors

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Redshirt-junior outfielder Matthew Barefoot has been honored as an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Atlantic All-Region Second Team member, as announced by the organizations Wednesday morning. The merit is Barefoot's second of his career as he was also named to the second team last season.

The All-Region teams are voted on by members of the ABCA and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Division I All-America Committee. A full list can be found below.

Barefoot was named first team all-conference in 2019 after finishing the regular season as Campbell's leader in slugging percentage (.574), runs scored (49), home runs (12), RBI (44) and hit by pitches (12). He finished his redshirt-junior season with a .311 batting average, .407 on-base percentage and .570 slugging percentage, blasting 14 home runs with 48 RBI. He ranked fourth in the conference in slugging percentage and tied for third in home runs.

Barefoot was named the Big South Player of the Week on March 25 after going 10-for-22 (.455) across Campbell's five games that week. He was also named to the Big South Championship All-Tournament Team and was selected to the NCAA Greenville Regional All-Regional Team.

The Dunn, N.C., native finished his career in the top-10 of nine Campbell baseball leader boards: at-bats (679, 9th), runs (159, T-5th), hits (228, 9th), stolen bases (65, 4th), doubles (53, 5th), home runs (30, T-7th), total bases (383, 5th), slugging percentage (.564, 10th) and hit by pitches (41, 3rd). A mainstay in the Campbell outfield, Barefoot made 164 career starts as an outfielder, including 134 as the leftfielder.

Barefoot was one of two Big South student-athletes to receive an Atlantic All-Region distinction from the ABCA as Radford designated hitter J.D. Mundy joined him on the second team.

Campbell finished its 2019 campaign 37-21 overall, good for the winningest season under five-year head coach Justin Haire. The Fighting Camels swept the Big South regular season and tournament titles for the second-straight season, making their second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. CU went 2-0 over its first two Greenville Regional games for the first time in program history before dropping back-to-back games to ECU in the championship games.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 11,000 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 76th annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 2-5, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee.
