BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Head coach
Kevin McGeehan has announced the addition of Chris Long and Kevin Grek to the Fighting Camel basketball staff. Long will serve as Director of Basketball Operations, while Grek takes over as Director of Player Development.
Long joins the Campbell staff after a six-year stint at Elon, where he served five seasons as assistant coach under Matt Matheny.
During his six seasons on the Elon staff, Long helped guide a Phoenix program that was ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll and posted the most victories (70) in a four-year period in the team's Division I era. He also coached three-time Academic All-American Tyler Seibring, who also earned all-CAA honors on three occasions.
After joining the Phoenix staff in 2013, Long served as Director of Basketball Operations for one season before being promoted to assistant coach in 2014. He was involved in all phases of the program, including recruiting, on-floor coaching, game strategy, summer camps and alumni relations.
A four-year letter winner at Elon from 2007-11, Long spent two seasons playing professional basketball in Poland and Romania. After signing with the Miercurea Ciuc basketball club in Romania in 2011, he agreed to terms with Siarka Jerzioro in Poland in 2012.
Long, who earned a B.A in psychology from Elon in 2011, earned All-Southern Conference honors as a senior and finished his career second on the program's all-time assists list. He completed his career ranked among the school's top five leaders in three-point field goals, assists and steals.
"Chris joins us after a very successful time as both a player and coach at Elon," said McGeehan. "He also played professionally for a number of years after college. I have known Chris since we recruited him at Richmond years ago. He has a great mind for the game and I am looking forward to having his perspective for us. I believe Chris will be a great addition to our staff."
Grek joins the Fighting Camels after serving as Graduate Assistant Coach at Rutgers University-Newark over the last two seasons. He helped guide the Scarlet Raiders to an ECAC title game appearance in 2019 and coached three players who ended their careers with more than 1,000 points.
While in Newark, Grek was involved in all phases of the program, including recruiting, daily operations, strength and conditioning, scouting, film breaking, academic monitoring and individual player development.
A 2017 cum laude graduate of Kean University with a B.A. in mathematical sciences, Grek was a four-year letter winner and served as captain his final two seasons. He was named team MVP in 2016 and was a three-time Kean Scholar-Athlete award winner. Grek also earned a place on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court in 2016 and 2017.
"Kevin is an incredible worker," said McGeehan. "He has been working in Division III at Rutgers-Newark and has been a part of our Basketball Camps for the past several years. I believe he will be a great coach and will really help our program continue to grow."
Long and Grek join a Fighting Camel program that is coming off a Big South Conference regular season championship and three-straight post-season appearances, including a trip to the 2019 NIT. CU finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-13 mark and 12-4 record in the league.
