BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After Campbell's dramatic win over Davidson, three Camels have been named Big South Football Players of the Week, announced Monday by the conference.
Linebacker
Justice Galloway-Velazquez has been tabbed the league's defensive player of the week, while kicker
Colin Gary took top special teams honors, and wide receiver
Jalen Kelsey was named freshman of the week.
Galloway-Velazquez turned in one of the best defensive performances in Campbell history, posting 14 tackles with two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery against the Wildcats. While tying a school record for fumbles forced in a single game, the sophomore played a hand in three of the Camels' four takeaways, also tipping a Davidson pass on
Dorian Jones' interception.
Galloway-Velazquez disrupted three consecutive Davidson possessions, all in the second quarter, starting with the interception, and followed by two straight forced fumbles, the first recovered by the linebacker. Galloway-Velazquez' 14 tackles are the most ever by a Camel with two forced fumbles in a game (previous Matt Farris vs. Marist 11/17/12).
Gary's 50 yard game-winning field goal pushed Campbell past Davidson 31-29 as the clock hit 0:00 Saturday night at Barker-Lane Stadium. Gary's 50-yarder set a school record for longest made field goal, breaking
Mitchell Brown's former mark of 49 yards, set in a win over Butler in 2016. The redshirt senior's previous career long was 37 yards.
Kelsey, meanwhile, collected two catches, both for touchdowns, with 71 yards in Campbell's win over Davidson. Over his last two games, Kelsey owns four catches for 112 yards and three touchdowns, including a 42-yard snag that put Campbell ahead 28-14 with 5:17 remaining against the Wildcats. Kelsey also recorded two catches for 41 yards and a touchdown against Shaw.
The 2-1 Camels will head back on the road this week, traveling to Mercer for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 28.
