Camels host Bucs Thursday on ESPNU

7 pm tip-off at Gore Arena

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the third time in just over a calendar year, ESPNU cameras will focus on Gore Arena Thursday when Campbell hosts Charleston Southern in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.

The Camels (10-6, 1-3) are coming off a 68-63 loss Saturday at preseason Big South favorite Radford. Charleston Southern (7-9, 1-3) dropped its third-straight game Saturday in a 71-69 setback against UNC Asheville.

At Radford, Jordan Whitfield hit a career scoring high for the third-straight game with 18 points, while Cedric Henderson, Jr., added 17 points for the Camels.

  • Campbell leads the Big South and ranks 39th nationally in free throw percentage (.758) and 21st in 3-point field goal defense (.282).  The Camels are also 26th in turnover margin (+3.6) and 31st in turnovers forced (16.94).
  • The Camels have allowed an opponent to shoot better than 50 percent from the floor just twice this season.
  • Paced by Henderson (12.1), Whitfield (10.5) and Cory Gensler (9.1), six Camels are averaging at least 6.5 points per outing, while 11 are playing double-figure minutes.
  • Charleston Southern sophomore guard Dontrell Shuler ranks third among Big South scoring leaders (17.9), while junior wing Phlandrous Fleming is 9th (14.0) and first in rebounding (8.3).
  • The Camels own a 4-2 record at Gore Arena this year, 0-2 vs. Big South teams in Buies Creek.  Charleston Southern is 2-5 in true road games, 0-1 in league play, but posted a 68-60 win on Dec. 3 at SEC member Missouri.
  • Campbell stands 5-3 in two-possession games this season (decided by six, or fewer, points), including wins at Coastal Carolina (75-74), vs. Jacksonville (62-57), at Florida Gulf Coast (51-46), vs. North Dakota (58-56) and at Asheville (64-62).
  • In its four Big South games, Campbell is averaging 66 points, while allowing 71.  Whitfield leads the team with a 14.8 scoring average in league contests, while Henderson chips in 11.5.  CU opened league play with home losses to Gardner-Webb (67-65) and Winthrop (87-72) before winning at UNC Asheville (64-62) last Wednesday.
  • Since opening Big South play with an 89-75 win over USC Upstate on Jan. 2, the Buccaneers have dropped a 92-85 decision at Hampton (Jan. 4) and lost at home to Longwood (74-56) and UNC Asheville (71-69). The Bucs have allowed 78 points per game to their Big South foes, while scoring an average of 74.8.  Fleming is averaging 20.8 points and shooting 54% from the floor in league contests.
  • Charleston Southern owns a slim 27-26 edge in the all-time series with the Camels, including an 8-6 advantage since Campbell re-joined the Big South Conference in 2011-12.  CU stands 4-2 all-time vs. the Bucs at Gore Arena, which opened before the 2008-09 season.
  • In the only meeting between the teams last season, Campbell rallied for a late 73-72 victory at the CSU Field House on Jan. 19, 2019. Chris Clemons hit a pull-up three with 14 seconds left and Campbell recovered from a 14-point deficit in the second half.  Clemons finished with 29 points, and Jordan Whitfield forced Charleston Southern's Christian Keeling into an off-balance leaner that missed at the buzzer to give the Camels back-to-back Big South road wins for the first time since the 2015-16 season.  Gensler added 14 points and 7 rebounds for the Camels.
  • The CSU Field House holds the distinction of being the 2nd-smallest capacity (881) home court in the Division I ranks (USC Upstate's Hodge Center seats 837).  Campbell's old venue -- Carter Gym -- was the country's smallest men's setting (947 seats) before CSU reconfigured its building and Upstate joined D1.  CU moved into the 3,095-seat Gore Arena before the 2008-09 season.
  • Campbell and Charleston Southern have met twice in Big South Championship games.  The Bucs claimed the 1987 final 64-63 at Savannah, Ga. Campbell won the 1992 title game 67-53 to secure its first NCAA tournament berth.
  • Along with Radford, Winthrop and UNC Asheville, Campbell and Charleston Southern are original members of the Big South Conference since league play began in 1985-86.  Campbell was a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference from 1994-2011.
  • Following Thursday's game, the Camels host Longwood Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
