Camels head to Charleston Southern Thursday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – If history has any bearing on Thursday's outcome, expect a tight game when Campbell (13-14, 4-11) travels to Charleston Southern (13-14, 7-8) for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

The last five meetings between the Big South Conference charter members at the cozy CSU Field House have been decided by a total of 13 points - an average margin of victory of 2.6 points.  The largest victory margin in that span was a four-point CSU win in 2018.  Campbell won on the Bucs' home floor in 2016 and 2019 when Chris Clemons hit a pull-up three with 14 seconds left and CU recovered from a 14-point deficit in the second half.

Last month at  Buies Creek, Deontaye Buskey and Phlandrous Fleming each scored 21 points and dealt six assists apiece to lead Charleston Southern to a 77-62 win.  The Bucs shot 61 percent in the second half, 56 percent for the game and knocked down 13-of-25 threes.  Austin McCullough (11), Cory Gensler (10) and Ja'Cor Nelson (10) hit double digits for the Camels.

Both Campbell and CSU have alternated wins and losses in the last four outings heading into Thursday's action.  Campbell is coming off a 73-60 setback Saturday at home vs. Radford, while Charleston fell 79-75 at UNC Asheville.

Cedric Henderson, Jr. scored 17 points on 7-10 shooting for the Camels, while Messiah Thompson added 11 and Gensler 10 against the Highlanders.

At Asheville, Travis Anderson (23) and Ty Jones (22) combined for 45 CSU points, but the Bucs could not overcome a 10-point deficit in the second half.

  • With 70 victories over the last four seasons, Cory Gensler leads the most successful 4-year senior class in the program's Division I era. The 2019 class, headed by Chris Clemons and Andrew Eudy, won 69 games in a four-year span.
  • The Camels own a 5-8 record on the road this season, 1-6 at Big South schools.  Charleston Southern is 7-4 at the "Buc Dome" - 4-3 vs. the league at home.
  • Seven of Campbell's 11 losses in Big South play have come by single-digit margins, including five by six, or fewer, points.
  • Gensler enters Thursday's game with 1,058 points - 26th overall in CU history and 14th in the program's Division I era (since '77-78).
  • The Camels have led at halftime in 9 of their last 10 games.
  • Charleston Southern owns a slim 28-26 edge in the all-time series with the Camels, including a 9-6 advantage since Campbell re-joined the Big South Conference in 2011-12.
  • In Big South Conference play, Charleston Southern is scoring at a 73.1 clip, while allowing 72.5 points per game.  Campbell rates 2nd among league schools in scoring defense in Big South games (69.5), but is averaging 66.5 points.
  • Campbell (.728) and Charleston Southern (.726) rank 1-2 in the Big South in team free throw percentage. In league contests, CSU tops the circuit (.764), while Campbell is 7th (.693).
  • Bucs senior wing Phlandrous Fleming, Jr., rates fourth among Big South scoring leaders (17.6), while ranking first in rebounding (8.7), 6th in assists (3.4) and 3rd in blocks (1.3).  In Big South play, his averages climb to 22.3 points (3rd), 9.7 boards (1st) and 4.2 dishes (4th).  He has posted a league-high seven 20-point, 10-rebound outings.
  • The CSU Field House holds the distinction of being the 2nd-smallest capacity (881) home court in the Division I ranks (USC Upstate's Hodge Center seats 833).  Campbell's old venue -- Carter Gym -- was the country's smallest men's setting (947 seats) before CSU reconfigured its building and Upstate joined D1.  CU moved into the 3,095-seat Gore Arena before the 2008-09 season.
  • Campbell and Charleston Southern have met twice in Big South Championship games.  The Bucs claimed the 1987 final 64-63 at Savannah, Ga. Campbell won the 1992 title game 67-53 to secure its first NCAA tournament berth.
  • Along with Radford, Winthrop and UNC Asheville, Campbell and Charleston Southern are original members of the Big South Conference since league play began in 1985-86.  Campbell was a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference from 1994-2011.
  • Following Thursday's contest, Campbell concludes its Big South road slate Saturday at Gardner-Webb (5:30 p.m.).
