Lacrosse opens 2020 at Elon Saturday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell will kick off the 2020 season on the road at Elon on Saturday. First draw is set for 1:00 p.m. at Rudd Field.

2020 will mark the eighth season of women's lacrosse at Campbell, and the seventh under the direction of head coach Dawn Easley, who picked up her 100th career win early in the 2019 campaign.

The Camels have reached at least the semifinals of the Big South Championship for four straight seasons, owning a .500 or better mark in regular season conference play each of those years. Campbell was picked third in the 2020 Big South Preseason Poll.

In 2020, Campbell returns 16 letterwinners, including five starters from last year's squad, while welcoming 13 newcomers.

Campbell will look to replace four of its top five points producers from 2019, including Melissa Placek, who finished her playing career as a four-time All-Big South performer, as well as CU's all-time leader in draw controls (385) and second leading goal scorer (159).

Two-time all-conference performer Sam Carey headlines the 2020 Camels, earning Preseason All-Big South honors. Carey posted 18 points on 16 goals and two assists, adding 80 draw controls, 25 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers in 2019. The midfielder ranked third in the Big South in draw controls per game (4.71) and sixth in free position goals made (4). She was the only player in the Big South with 10 draw controls in two separate games in 2019, notching five or more draw controls in seven games.

Sophomore Laura Will is the team's leading returning scorer, registering 33 points on 24 goals and nine assists as a rookie last season. Twice named Big South Freshman of the Week, Will scored a goal in 13 of her 17 games, including multiple goals six times.

Senior Allison Waldhauser will anchor the defense end of the field for the Camels, returning after producing 19 ground balls with eight caused turnovers last season, and notching a ground ball in each of her final 12 games. Waldhauser has started 47 straight games for the Camels.

Elon was picked in a tie for fifth, along with Drexel, in the CAA's preseason poll. The Phoenix 6-12 overall and 3-3 in conference play in 2019, with eight of their losses coming to nationally ranked competition. 2019 leading goal scorer Mae McGlynn returns for the Phoenix, tallying 42 goals and 45 total points as a sophomore a year ago.

Campbell and Elon will be meeting to open the year for the second consecutive season. The Phoenix topped CU 15-5 in 2019's opener, and lead the all-time series 2-1.

Following Saturday's opener, the Camels will make their home debut on Wednesday, February 12 at 3:00 p.m., hosting former conference rival Coastal Carolina at Barker-Lane Stadium.
