Campbell Softball drops pair at Kickin' Chicken Classic

Diana Parker, Rios hit home runs

CONWAY, S.C. - The Campbell softball team concluded the second day of the Kickin' Chicken Classic, falling to Iowa, 5-2, and Virginia Tech, 11-3 in six innings.

Campbell moves to 0-3 on the year while Iowa advanced to 3-1. Virginia Tech, who is currently receiving votes for the national polls, moved to 3-0.

Game One - Iowa 5, Campbell 2
Campbell took control of the game as freshman Diana Parker hit a solo homer, her first in her career, in the second inning. 

Iowa responded in the fourth as DoniRae Mayhew reached safely on a Campbell error. Kit Rocco singled to right field and Avery Guy took a walk to load the bases with one out. Cameron Cecil nearly cleared all the bases with a two-run double, but the Camels prevented a run from scoring with an 8-3-2 putout at the plate. Starting pitcher Georgeanna Barefoot struck out the next Iowa batter to close out the inning.

Morgan Rios answered back later in the fourth as she hit another Campbell solo homer, tying the game at 2-2.

The Hawkeyes would break the tie in the next inning as designated player Kalena Burns hit a two-RBI double to the gap in left center. Iowa then tacked on another run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.

Campbell attempted to rally in the seventh as Rios was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Diana Parker reached on a fielder's choice as Danielle Northrup was thrown out at second. Mackenzie Parker singled to left field, advancing Diana Parker, but two pop-outs would end the rally.

Georgeanna Barefoot (0-2) took the loss after throwing a complete game, giving up three earned runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. Iowa's Lauren Shaw (2-1) earned her second win giving up two earned runs on four hits while striking out nine.


Game Two - Virginia Tech 11, Campbell 3 (6 inn.)
The Camels grabbed some early momentum against the Hokies in the first inning, starting with Destini England and Kayla Fredendall drawing walks. 

Designated player and senior Kynadi Tipler drove home former high school teammate England on her single through the left side, advancing to second on the throw to the plate. 

Cassie Wancheck doubled down the left field line to drive in two more runs as Campbell earned a 3-0 lead.

Virginia Tech responded later in the inning, scoring three runs of its own to tie the game. Al Velazquez started the scoring in the inning as she drove home a run with a double.

The Hokies added another run as Campbell settled for an out at first on a hard hit ball tipped off the glove of starting pitcher Megan Richards. Kelsey Bennett scored the tying run on her single to right field. 

The game remained close until the third when Virginia Tech took its first lead of the game on another RBI-single from Bennett. The Hokies added two more runs in the fourth, taking a 6-3 lead. The run-rule came into effect in the sixth as the Hokies scored five runs on three hits to take the 11-3 victory.

Wancheck shined in the batter's box for the Camels as the junior reached base safely on all three of her at bats, going 2-for-2 with a walk.

Kayla Howald (0-1) picked up the loss in the decision after giving up two earned runs in three and a third innings of work. Virginia Tech's Kaylee Hewitt (2-0) earned the win, fanning eight batters in six innings.
