BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Since the end of last season you may have missed some of our new transfers. We announced our
Top-10 incoming recruiting class of 2020 back in June, but there are still a few new wrestlers joining our roster who you may not have met.
Zurich Storm (125 lbs) [Junior]
Zurich may not be "new" to the lineup, considering he joined Campbell's roster in January; however, he is a new transfer within the past season. He will be allowed to don the Campbell singlet for the first time starting this fall, and we're enthusiastic to see what he brings to the lineup. Originally a
PIAA AAA state placer from New Oxford High School, Storm knew he wanted to travel south for college and committed to NC State.
During his first collegiate season in 2018, he made the finals of the Hokie Open, Pembroke Classic and Wilkes Open. The following season, Zurich started for NC State at 125 pounds. He earned 16 wins, including a championship at the Wolfpack Open.
Zurich initially made the transfer last semester and was drawn to Campbell's coaching staff. Even with the big offseason changes, Zurich committed to staying at Campbell. He says, "I'm here to do one thing, and that's win an NCAA title. And I believe in Scotti and the coaches here now that are going to help me do that. That's why I decided to stay."
Shannon Hanna (141 lbs) [Sophomore]
Unfortunately,
Old Dominion dropped its program in April and its whole lineup had to find new homes. We wish we could have added Shannon Hanna to our roster under better circumstances, but we're glad that Coach Thomas brought Hanna with him to the Creek.
Hanna started his freshman season at ODU and had a 4-2 MAC dual meet record. He picked up wins at Battle at The Citadel, Journeyman Classic and the Wolfpack Open, where he actually wrestled Gabe Hixenbaugh. Interestingly enough, that isn't his only connection to the Camels; in fact, Hanna wrestled in high school under Campbell alumnus Brent Jorge and was from the same area in Florida as the Rivera brothers, two incoming freshmen.
Dating back to his high school days Shannon knew Coach Sentes since they also both share a Florida connection. When his program was cut at ODU, Hanna knew Campbell was the school for him, and he even calls it "fate."
Domenic Zaccone (133 lbs) [R-Freshman]
From Fighting Illini to Fighting Camel, Domenic Zaccone enters his redshirt freshman year at Campbell University. As a multiple-time IHSA state placer, Zaccone initially decided to stay in his home state of Illinois. Before entering college he made the semifinals of the
Junior Men's Freestyle USMC National Championships in a loaded bracket and ended up placing sixth. During his freshman season at Illinois, he went undefeated and won the Kaufman Brand Open. Zaccone made the transfer in the offseason.
Even with old faces leaving the roster from graduation, there are plenty of new faces to get adjusted to seeing. 26 new freshmen and three transfers join the Camels' roster for the 2020-21 season.
