BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After going 2-0 to open the 2020-21 season, including a win over a ranked opponent, Campbell's
Benjamin Barton has been named the Southern Conference's wrestler of the week.
Barton picked up Campbell's first team points of the day at No. 8 Viginia Tech, taking a 7-4 decision over No. 25 Connor Brady. The redshirt senior, ranked No. 33 by The Open Mat at 157 pounds, tied it up 3-3 with a takedown in the final seconds of the second period, then extended his lead to 6-3 with an escape and a third period takedown, and securing the 7-4 win with riding time.
In the day's extra matches against the Hokies, Barton picked up another decision, defeating Clayton Ulrey 2-0.
Barton, a 2020-21 Preseason All-SoCon pick was the 2019 conference champion at 157, while going 3-2 during an injury-shortened 2019-20 season.
Campbell is scheduled to begin its SoCon slate in Lexington, Va. on January 16, squaring off with second-year program Presbyterian and host VMI.
