The North Carolina East/West Barbecue Bowl
Campbell and Gardner-Webb have announced the
North Carolina East/West BBQ Trophy, an annual rivalry game beginning this season.
The winner of the game each year will hoist and host the well-built, hefty trophy—topped with a decorative hog and adorned with a placard to engrave each year's winning team and score. On hand to present the trophy will be North Carolina BBQ expert, Bob Garner. Garner has written three books on North Carolina's favorite food and has appeared on Food Network, ABC's "Good Morning America," the Travel Channel's "Road Trip," and he produces specials for PBS North Carolina.
Most importantly, the losing team will be tasked with supplying a barbecue feast from its region—eastern-style for the Camels, western or Lexington-style for the Bulldogs—to the winning side.

Scouting Gardner-Webb
The Runnin' Bulldogs are 2-3 overall following last week's 54-17 loss at Monmouth in their Big South opener. After a pair of losses to FBS opponents (30-25 at Georgia Southern, 38-10 at Charlotte), GWU topping NCAA Division II Lincoln 56-0 and Western Carolina 52-34.
Bailey Fisher has thrown for 890 yards and seven touchdowns for the Runnin' Bulldogs, while Narii Gaither has rushed for 336 yards and two touchdowns, and Donovan Jones has tacked on four rushing touchdowns. The Camels will be meeting the Runnin' Bulldogs for the third time in CU's modern era (since 2008), with the series tied 1-1. The trip to Boiling Springs will be the first since Campbell's improbable
blocked punt returned for a touchdown in 2019, forcing overtime, where the Camels came out on top 49-47.
Looking ahead
The Camels return to Buies Creek for their Big South home opener on October 16, hosting league preseason favorite No. 25 Monmouth. The game will be Military Appreciation Day at Barker-Lane Stadium, with all active military and veterans receiving discounted tickets with valid ID.
The Camels will also host No. 17 Kennesaw State on October 23 for CU's 2012 Homecoming. Single game tickets for all three remaining Campbell home games remain on sale at

Slade named Big South Defensive Player of the Week
After leading Campbell to a road win in its 2021 Big South opener,
Darion Slade has been named the league's
defensive player of the week. Slade tallied a game-high 11 tackles in the 48-31 win against the Lions, including 1.0 stop for loss, to go along with a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown, returning to the CU lineup after missing a pair of games due to injury.
The sixth year senior caught
Jonathan Jones' third quarter forced fumble in the air and ran it in from 25 yards out for the first of two Campbell defensive scores in the win. Slade was also credited with assists on back to back tackles for loss to close the first quarter, including a touchdown saving stop on third down to force a UNA field goal.
This is the first career conference player of the week honor for the two-time All-Big South performer.
Back to back
Wiley Hartley became the first Campbell QB in its modern era to throw for 300 or more yards in back to back games. After tossing a school record 342 yards two weeks ago in a win over Presbyterian, the sophomore completed 18-of-31 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns.
Snead back in the end zone
Caleb Snead hauled in eight catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns for the Camels at North Alabama, collecting his second multi-score game already this season. The wide out, who owns six TDs in four games in 2021, nearly doubled his season receiving yards total at UNA, now with 337 yards on the year.
The Lynchburg, Va. native's 162 yards receiving were the second most in his career, and tied for the third most in CU single game history.
Playing just his third season on the field after missing all of 2020, as well as multiple games in 2019, Snead is second all-time in CU receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and has scored 21 career touchdowns in only 24 games.
Snead, now with 21 career scores, is just the fourth Camel in history to score at least 20 career touchdowns, tied with De'Shawn Jones (2013-16), and trailing only Aaron Blockmon (2015-18) and Daniel Smith (2017-18), who both scored 25 career TDs.
Snead is two scores shy of Blockmon's receiving touchdowns record of 23. Blockmon is also CU's all-time leading receiver with 2,647 yards.
Defense surging
Campbell notched two defensive touchdowns (fumble or interception return) in a game for just the third time in its modern era (since 2008) at North Alabama, accomplishing the feat for the first time against a Division I opponent. The Camels also scored two defensive TDs against Apprentice in 2011 (fumble return, interception return) and at Carthage in 2008 (two interception returns). It was the first time a Campbell team had returned two fumbles for touchdowns in a game.
The CU defense has tallied 14 takeaways on the season, all coming over the last two games, currently tied for the FCS lead with Northern Iowa. The Camels are one of six FCS teams with three defensive touchdowns, leading the nation, also standing among the country's leaders in fumbles recovered (3
rd nationally with six), interceptions (6
th, 8) and sacks (6
th, 3.5 per game).
Campbell owns 13 non-offensive touchdowns since 2017.
Back to Big South play
The UNA game marked Campbell's first Big South contest in 679 days (November 23, 2019 at Charleston Southern).
The Camels played an abbreviated four-game, all-FBS schedule in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, taking on Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State and Wake Forest. Among the milestones set during the 21-day, four game season, Campbell received unprecedented national attention with three nationally televised games, including a Friday night matchup at Coastal Carolina on ESPN.
CU opted out of the 2021 FCS spring season.
Off to the right start
CU has now won four of its last five and five conference openers, dating back to 2016. The Camels are 2-1 in Big South openers since joining the league in 2018.
The Camels topped Presbyterian 28-14 in 2019, and won their final two PFL openers over Butler (33-27 OT) in 2016 and at Stetson (49-21) in 2017. Campbell is now 5-8 all-time in conference openers, including its time in the Pioneer Football League from 2008-17.
The team's 48 points at UNA are the second most ever for the Camels in a conference opener (W 49-21 at Stetson 9/23/17), as well as the second most points scored for a Campbell team in a conference road game. In addition to the 2017 win at Stetson, the Camels also posted a 49-47 victory in overtime at Gardner-Webb (10/26/19) in 2019.
Campbell won its third straight game coming off an open date, dating back to 2019.
Block that kick
The Camels blocked their third kick of the year on Saturday at UNA, with
Joe Johnson denying a 50 yard field goal attempt to set up a TD just before the end of the first half. It was CU's second blocked field goal of the season. Campbell also blocked a field goal and a punt against Elon.
Williams hits career mark
Junior quarterback
Hajj-Malik Williams surpassed 3,000 career passing yards against Elon, becoming the second Campbell QB to hit the milestone (Daniel Smith – 3,471 – 2017-18). Williams has now collected 3,127 career passing yards in 18 career games, including six against FBS opponents. The junior is also just 50 rushing yards shy of 1,000 for his career.

Campbell's
Levi Wiggins has been recognized as
one of 176 semifinalists for the 2021 William V. Campbell Trophy, college football's premier scholar-athlete award, by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). Wiggins was also a 2020 Campbell Trophy semifinalist.
