Camels defeat Radford 5-1 in Big South semi

CU to host league final Sunday at 1 PM

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jackie Richards scored a goal and dealt three assists to lead Campbell to a 5-1 win over Radford Thursday in the semifinal round of the Big South Conference Championship at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Jessica Donald scored twice for top-seeded Campbell (12-3-2), which will host second-seeded High Point Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the final. Tickets are available at GoCamels.com/tickets.

Sunday's winner will receive the league's automatic berth in the NCAA College Cup.

The nation's 11th-highest scoring team at 2.75 goals per game, Campbell took a 3-goal lead when Donald, Elyssa Nowowieski and Richards all scored in a 10-minute span near the hour mark.  Amber Liston added a goal after 80 minutes for the Camels, who extended their winning streak to six matches.

"It's hard to beat a good team twice in the same year and Radford's a fantastic team," said Campbell head coach Samar Azem, who recorded her 50th coaching win in five seasons at her alma mater.  "To score five goals against a very strong defensive team like that really says a lot about our kids."

Radford, which entered the contest ranked eighth in the country in goals per game (2.89), nearly went in front in the 21st minute when Reese Degnan broke free, but Camel keeper Stephanie Martelli charged off her line to make the save.

The Highlanders (13-5-1) took the lead in the 41st minute when Maevyn Jones took a shot just inside the box that deflected into the top right corner of the net for her fifth goal of the year.

However, the Camels equalized just 1:44 later when Richards delivered a cross that Donald volleyed in at the back post for her eighth strike of the season.

Radford entered Thursday's match coming off seven-straight shutouts – the team's longest stretch of clean sheets since 1984 – and had not allowed a goal since the 63rd minute Oct. 2 against USC Upstate.  Donald's first-half goal ended the Highlander shutout streak at 698 minutes.

Campbell weathered a 47th minute flurry in front of its net when shots from Kayla Thomas and Amy Swain were cleared off the line.

A first-team all-league performer, Donald nodded home Richards' cross in the 60th minute for her ninth goal of the year and fourth winner.  Less than five minutes later, Liston jumped on a loose ball in the Radford end and crossed to Nowowieski – who scored a hat trick in a 4-3 win over Radford on Sept. 26 – and slotted home her sixth of the season.

Richards then scored her sixth this year on a failed clearance following a 70th minute corner kick.  She then split the Radford back line with a pass to set up Liston's finish.

The victory sets up a Sunday rematch of last season's Big South final, which Campbell won 4-3 at High Point to claim a trip to the College Cup.  High Point defeated third seed Longwood 3-0 Thursday afternoon.

The Camels won 2-1 on Sept. 18 at High Point in the league opener on the way to a 9-1 record and regular season championship.

Campbell finished with a 21-12 edge over the Highlanders in shots, 12-7 in shots on target.  Martelli finished with four saves, while Lauren Seedlock had seven stops in the Radford nets.
