Box Score 2 ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Campbell split the series-opening doubleheader with UNC Asheville Saturday, dropping the first game late before a blowout win in game two. Both starting pitchers turned in quality starts for the Camels on the day.
Ryan Chasse and
Thomas Harrington combined to toss 12.0 innings and allowed just four earned runs and struck out 14.
Connor Denning paced the offense through both games with six total hits while
Spencer Packard drove in five runs.
With the split, the Camels reached the 10-win mark on the year and are now 10-6, 5-3 in Big South play. UNC Asheville moves to 3-11, 2-7 in the league.
GAME 1 RECAP
Campbell threatened in the top of the first loading the bases with one out but couldn't push a run across. Asheville got two on in the bottom of the frame but also couldn't get on the board.
The Bulldogs did get two in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by Grayson Preslar to take a 2-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long as Campbell posted a four-spot in the top of the third. After
Waldy Arias led off with a HBP, his 11
th time being hit this season (a national best), and a Denning single, Packard drove in the pair. On the very next pitch,
Zach Neto went deep to left to give Campbell a 4-2 lead. That marked Neto's first career home run.
Asheville got one back on an RBI double in the fifth, but Campbell again had the answer in the next inning. This time it was a run on a
Lawson Harrill sac fly to push the lead back to two at 5-3.
The Bulldogs got the best of the Camel bullpen in the eighth inning. Asheville scored five runs on four hits in the frame to quickly push the score to 8-5.
Campbell got one in the ninth and PUT tying run on base, but that was all and ultimately fell 8-6.
Ty Cummings was tagged with the loss on the mound.
Ryan Chasse turned his second quality start of the season, posting a line of 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K. His nine strikeouts marked a new career high for the lefty.
GAME 2
It was a busy first inning for both teams in game two. Campbell got a pair in the top of the frame on an infield hit by
Collin Wolf and a productive groundout from Packard. Asheville responded with two of their own, scored on a triple and single to tie it up.
It was all Campbell the rest of the way. The Camels took the lead in the third on another RBI single from Wolf to make it 3-2.
Bryce Arnold added to the lead with a two-run shot in the fourth, his first of the year.
Campbell blew the game wide open in the seventh by posting a seven spot, the biggest inning of the year so far. Eleven Camels came to the plate in the inning and six runs were scored before the first out. All seven runs were scored on separate plays that featured two wild pitches, a passed ball, an RBI single, double and groundout. By the end of the frame, Cambpell led by 10 at 12-2.
Packard added one more in the eighth with his third home run of the season.
Thomas Harrington turned in Campbell's second quality start of the day going six innings, allowing four hits, two runs, zero walks and striking out five. Six innings pitched marked his longest outing of the season.
Wolf had his best offensive game of the season going 4-5 with four RBI.
Connor Denning's 4-5 day gave him his second four-hit game of the year.
Connor Denning also tallied four hits for his second four-hit game of the year. Williams and Arnold had three RBIs each on the day.
Asheville got two in the bottom of the eighth, but it was too little too late, and Campbell got the win by a final of 17-4.
Thomas Harrington earned the win with a line of 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 Ks.
The two teams return to Greenwood Field tomorrow at 2 pm for the series rubber match.
Jonathan Beymer is expected to take the mound for Campbell.
