Box Score Boiling Springs, N.C. – Campbell jumped on the Gardner-Webb bullpen for eight runs across the seventh and eighth innings to pull ahead and win the series opener 10-6. The Camel offense stayed hot and went deep three times on the night while reaching double-digit hits for the eighth time in the last nine games.
With the win, Campbell improves to 17-10, 12-6 in the Big South and vault to the top of the Big South standings. The Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 13-15, 12-7 in the league. The win is just Campbell's second series opening win in Big South play this season.
Campbell fell behind three separate times during the early stages of the game, but had the answer each time to hang around until the big seventh inning. Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off the bat of Cam Pearcey in the bottom of the first.
Campbell countered the home run with some small ball, getting on the board as
Mason De La Cruz dropped down a bunt that forced an overthrow and allowed
Ty Babin to score from second.
After Gardner-Webb went up 2-1, Neto evened the score with a ball that just carried the wall in left center for his fourth blast of the year. The redshirt freshman has been red-hot for the Camels at the plate, now with 19 hits in his last nine games, including eight multi-hit games.
The game could have gotten out of hand multiple times for the Camels, but
Thomas Harrington and
Logan Heintzman each forced GWU to leave the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings to keep the game within reach.
After chasing GWU starter Mason Miller, Campbell took advantage of the Bulldog bullpen. Seven runs on seven hits put the Camels up 9-5 by the end of the frame. Christian delivered the big hit with a three-run opposite field home run to right to give Campbell its first lead of the night.
Spencer Packard got in on the action with a solo home run in the eighth for an insurance run and push the lead to five at 10-5.
Packard led the way at the plate with three hits on the evening, while Neto, Christian and Babin all added two apiece. Every Camel in the starting lineup reached safely.
Kevin Westlake earned his first win of the season on the bump going 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. GWU's Isaac Campbell was tagged with the loss.
Campbell has now hit at least one home run in six straight games, the longest streak since going deep in eight straight from to May 16 to June 2, 2019.
Campbell will look to win the series during tomorrow's doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
Ryan Chasse is expected to take the mound for the Camels in the first game tomorrow. Each game will be available again on ESPN+.
