BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell hits the road for the first time in Big South Conference play Monday with a 5 p.m. tipoff at Winthrop.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but pushed back due to Covid-19 protocols within the Eagles program.
Campbell (7-5, 0-1) is coming off a 60-54 loss Wednesday to UNC Asheville.
Ricky Clemons led the Camels with 15 points, while Jesus Carralero added 14 and
Messiah Thompson 10.
Winthrop (7-6, 0-0) has not played since a 78-40 win over Converse College Dec. 31. D.J. Burns, Jr led the Eagles with 20 points, while Russell Jones Jr., came off the bench to add 15 on 5-of-8 3-point shooting.
Monday's game features a matchup of the teams picked to win Big South Conference divisions in the league's preseason poll. Campbell was chosen as the North Division favorite, while Winthrop was tabbed to claim the South.
- Campbell has held all 12 of its opponents below 70 points and ranks first in the Big South, 21st in the nation, in scoring defense (59.7). CU tops the BSC in defensive rebounding percentage (.785) and is 3rd in FG% defense (.408).
- Three Camels rank among the Big South's top 25 scorers - Cedric Henderson, Jr. (12th, 11.8), Carralero (20th, 11.3) and Clemons (23rd, 10.7).
- The Big South preseason player of the year, D.J. Burns, Jr. of Winthrop ranks 2nd among league leaders in scoring (17.2) and FG% (.628) and 15th in rebounding (5.1).
- Following Monday's game, the Camels host Charleston Southern Wednesday (Jan. 12) and Radford (Jan. 15).
CAMPBELL-WINTHROP NOTES
- Winthrop is 5-0 at home this year, including wins over Mercer, Hartford and Furman. Dating to last season, the Eagles have won eight-straight and 19 of their last 20 games at the Winthrop Coliseum. The Camels stand 3-3 away from Gore Arena with wins over Hartford (neutral), Marshall and Stetson.
- Winthrop leads the Big South in team field goal percentage (.473), and is 2nd in scoring (77.7), 3-point FG% (.377) and 3-pointers per game (9.5).
- An 82-74 win Nov. 27 at Washington marked Winthrop's 11th all-time victory against a team from a Power 5 league.
- The Eagles lead the all-time series with Campbell 24-21, but the Winthrop has won the last seven meetings. WU stands 15-8 all-time against the Camels in Rock Hill.
- The team that has led at half-time has won 11 of the last 13 meetings between the Camels and Eagles.
- Winthrop has defeated Campbell in the Big South final at WInthrop Coliseum twice in the last five years. The top-seeded Eagles downed seventh seed Campbell 76-59 in the 2017 Big South Conference final at Rock Hill. Last year, No. 1 seed Winthrop downed the third-seeded Camels 80-53 to win back-to-back league titles.
- Four of the five players in Winthrop's starting lineup came to the Eagles via the transfer route. D.J. Burns (Tennessee), Cory Hightower (Presbyterian/Western Carolina), Patrick Good (ETSU) and Drew Buggs (Missouri) all began their careers at different Division I schools.
- Founded in 1886 to train young women to teach in the public schools, Winthrop became co-educational in 1974 and joined NCAA Division I as a Big South Conference charter member in 1984-85.
