12 Camels named to All-Big South teams

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell has placed a school record 12 individuals on the Big South's 2022 all-conference teams, announced today by the league.

Earning First Team All-Big South honors were tight end Julian Hill, offensive tackle Mike Edwards, long snapper Jackson Hayes and punt returner Josh McNeely, while running back Bryant Barr, guard Isaiah Burch, defensive ends Brevin Allen and Josh Johnson, linebacker CJ Tillman, kicker Caleb Dowden and punter Corey Petersen were tabbed Second Team All-Big South. Linebacker Keshawn Thompson was also named to the league's all-academic team.

Gardner-Webb quarterback Bailey Fisher was voted the 2022 Big South Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate defensive lineman Ty French earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.  In addition, Charleston Southern wide receiver Seth Anderson was named the Offensive Freshman of the Year, while GWU linebacker Ty Anderson was the Defensive Freshman of the Year honoree.  Bryant kickoff returner Anthony Frederick was voted Special Teams Player of the Year and Gardner-Webb head coach Tre Lamb was selected Coach of the Year.  Gardner-Webb linebacker William McRainey was also named the Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Hill earned All-Big South honor for the third time in his career, registering 659 yards receiving with five TD catches and 38 total receptions, leading all Big South tight ends in those categories. A Fayetteville native, Hill posted 50 or more receiving yards six times on the season, including a career-high 122 yards on four catches with a touchdown at Bryant. The graduate tight end added a rushing touchdown at North Carolina A&T, also helping lead the Camels to 500 or more yards of total offense four times, and 400 or more passing yards twice.

Edwards was named to the Big South's all-conference first team, anchoring the left side of an offensive line that helped CU set a single season passing yards record for the second straight year, along with guard Isaiah Burch, who earned Second Team All-Big South honors. From Hope Mills, Edwards started Campbell's first nine games before being lost due to injury, pushing the Camels to 500 or more yards or total offense four times.

Edwards has been named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 and Reese's Senior Bowl watch lists. Burch, meanwhile, started every game for the Camels on the offensive line for the second straight season, primarily at right guard.

Hayes earned a spot on the league's first team, handling every long and short snap for the Camels again in 2022. Hayes, a graduate student, helped the Camels improve from three field goals made to a school record 14 this season, leading a special teams unit that topped the Big South in punt return defense, ranking second in the conference in net punting and 31st nationally without allowing a block all season.

McNeely earned All-Big South honors for the second straight season, this time at punt return, also serving as the Camels' primary kick returner again in 2022. Logging nearly 700 yards in total returns, the Charlotte native returned a season-long 29 yard punt in a win over Charleston Southern, adding 30-plus yard kick returns against William & Mary, Jackson State and Gardner-Webb. Named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week after posting 104 total return yards and setting up two CU scores at William & Mary, McNeely was also a regular as a cornerback on the Campbell defense, making 22 tackles and adding a fumble recovery.

Barr earned all-conference honors after posting 637 total yards, including 503 rushing and 134 receiving, with three touchdowns in nine games. The graduate from Greensboro ranked third in the Big South in rushing yards, amassing over 100 yards of total offense four times on the year, rushing for a career-high 135 yards with a touchdown in CU's win over North Carolina Central, and running for 107 yards with another score in a victory to open the season over The Citadel.

Allen became a four-time All-Big South honoree, despite being limited to just eight games in 2022. The redshirt senior totaled 22 tackles with 7.5 stops for loss, including 4.5 sacks, to go along with an interception, still ranking among the conference's leaders in tackles for loss and sacks. The defensive end from Greensboro, who earned All-America honors in 2021, was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week after posting three sacks and an interception in the first half of Campbell's win over Robert Morris, also earning honorable mention FCS defensive player of the week accolades. Allen has also been named to the Buck Buchanan watch list for FCS defensive player of the year, as well as the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000.

Johnson ranked second in the Big South Conference with 13.5 tackles for loss, also tying for the league lead with two forced fumbles. The grad student added 46 tackles while a blocked kick and four pass breakups, notching a TFL in nine of his 10 games played. The defensive end from Duluth, Ga. Posted 3.5 tackles for loss with a sack and a forced fumble in CU's season opening win over The Citadel, adding 2.0 TFLs with a sack in the Camels' win over North Carolina Central.

Tillman led the Camels with 82 tackles this season, ranking sixth in the Big South, on the way to all-league honors. The linebacker tallied 7.5 stops for loss with two sacks, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups, logging 10 or more tackles four times on the year, including a career high 16 stops with 2.0 tackles for loss in CU's season finale win at Delaware State. Tillman was a two-time Big South Defensive Player of the Week, first posting 11 tackles with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in a win over The Citadel, when he also earned an honorable mention FCS defensive player of the week nod, again earning conference weekly honors after gathering 12 tackles with a TFL in a win over Charleston Southern.

Earning all-conference honors in his first season in Buies Creek, Dowden tied for the Big South lead and set a Campbell record with 14 field goals made in 2022, connecting on 14-of-16 tries while making 39-of-40 point after attempts to lead the Camels with 81 points. The Statesboro, Ga. native was named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week after converting all three of his field goal tries against The Citadel, including a 36 yarder, making all six of his tries inside 30 yards, as well as a 42 yard field goal in a win over Robert Morris, and a 40 yard try in a win over Charleston Southern.

Petersen also earned all-conference honors after averaging 41.4 yards on 41 punts, including 50-plus yard boots while forcing eight fair catches. The grad student from Traralgon, Australia was twice named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week, with 16 of his 41 punts being downed inside the 20 for a league best .390 percentage.

Finally, Thompson was named to the Big South's All-Academic Team, currently pursuing his MBA. The Hillsborough native was a 2021 CoSida Academic All-District honoree and 2022 nominee, notching 25 tackles this season, including a sack in a win over Robert Morris, with a season-high four tackles against The Citadel and Bryant. Also a staple on the CU special teams units, Thompson gathered a career and team-high 80 tackles for the Camels in 2021.
