Camels defeat Presbyterian 61-53

Campbell wins fifth-straight conference opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell opened Big South play with 61-53 win over Presbyterian Saturday at Gore Arena.

Brittany Staves scored 14 points and had four rebounds while Svenia Nurenberg added 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Campbell (6-6, 1-0) who has won its last five conference openers.

Bryanna Brady led the Blue Hose (4-8, 0-1) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

After leading 25-19 at halftime, Campbell opened the third quarter on a 17-4 run behind five different players who knocked down a three. Shooting 76.9 percent (10-13) from the floor and making 6-of-7 threes in the period, the Camels led by as many as 22 entering the fourth quarter.

Presbyterian answered in the fourth, opening the period on a 13-0 run to cut the deficit to single-digits. A Paige Kindseth layup with 2:07 remaining cut the Camels lead to 57-53, but the Blue Hose never got any closer after shooting 0-for-4 from the floor and committing two turnovers to close out the game.

The Camels shot 44 percent (22-50) from the floor, made 10 threes and held a 37-27 edge on rebounds.

Presbyterian, which dropped its ninth-straight against the Camels, shot 40.7 percent (22-54) from the floor but made just 5-of-17 threes. Tilda Sjokvist added 14 points and Aubrie Kirscht poured in 13 off the bench for the Blue Hose.

Christabel Ezumah finished with eight points, nine rebounds and three steals while Gianni Boone finished with 11 points and three assists.

Campbell heads to Longwood Saturday in a rematch of last season's Big South Championship game. Tip from Willett Hall is set for 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
