Box Score BUIES CREEK - Campbell fell 10-2 (6 inn.) to UConn Friday night at the Charlotte Invitational.
The Camels (3-2) jumped out to a quick lead as Sterling Hairston hit a two-run home run to right center in the first. UConn (3-4) responded immediately by scoring five runs in the bottom half of the first, forcing Campbell to pull starting pitcher Georgeanna Barefoot for Kayla Howald.
Campbell managed to put runners in scoring position in each of the next five innings but failed to bring one across the plate. In total, CU collected 10 hits including two apiece from both Katelyn Chisholm and Tyra Parker and three from Kayla Fredendall.
Brianna Marcelino went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Huskies, scoring two runs and adding two stolen bases. Designated player Olivia Sappington collected four RBI while Jana Sanded added two for a UConn team that reached the finals of the Big East tournament a year ago.
Barefoot (2-1) picked up her first loss on the season after giving up four runs and walking two. Howald struck out five batters but gave up 13 hits and six runs in relief.
Meghan O'Neil took the win in the circle for the Huskies after allowing eight hits and striking out four in five innings of work.
Campbell returns to the Charlotte Invitational tomorrow when it plays hosts Charlotte. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on CUSA.TV.
