Camels host Runnin' Bulldogs Wednesday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Coming off its best shooting performance of the season, Campbell (13-8, 6-4) hosts Gardner-Webb (13-10, 7-3) Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) on ESPN+.  Tickets are available at GoCamels.com/tickets.
 
Two of the Big South's hottest teams will square off in Buies Creek.  Campbell has won 4 of its last 5 outings, while GWU is on a 4-game win streak.
 
CU is coming off an 80-71 win Saturday at USC Upstate when the Camels shot a season-high 63.5% from the floor.  Jordan Whitfield led 5 Camels in double digits with 17 points.  Jesus Carralero and Cedric Henderson, Jr. added 16 each, while Ricky Clemons and Messiah Thompson both scored 12.
 
Gardner-Webb held NC A&T to 39 percent shooting in Saturday's 69-62 win at Boiling Springs.  Anthony Selden came off the bench to score 18 points and grab 12 rebounds for GWU.
 
CAMPBELL vs. GARDNER-WEBB NOTES
  • Campbell University COVID-19 policy requires all individuals to wear face masks indoors. A clear bag policy is in effect for all games in Gore Arena.
  • CU leads the league and ranks 17th in the country in team FG% (.486).  CU has shot better than 50 percent in 6 of 10 league games.
  • CU has held 16 of its opponents below 70 points and ranks 1st in the Big South, 25th in the nation, in scoring defense (62.4).
  • Campbell is 8-2 at home this season, 4-1 vs. Big South teams at Gore Arena. Gardner-Webb stands 4-8 on the road, but is 3-2 at league foes.
  • Campbell stands 2-3 vs. Big South Conference South Division schools this season, including wins over Charleston Southern (67-52) and USC Upstate (80-71) and losses to Asheville (54-60), Winthrop (72-74) and Presbyterian (58-64).  GWU is 4-1 vs. North Division opponents - the lone loss coming Jan. 15 at Longwood (60-66).
  • Four Camels rank among the Big South's top 30 scorers - Cedric Henderson (13th, 13.2), Jordan Whitfield (17th, 12.1), Jesus Carralero (28th, 10.1), Ricky Clemons (29th, 10.1).
  • D'Maurian Williams leads Gardner-Webb and ranks 8th among Big South scoring leaders (14.0), while Lance Terry is 12th in the league (13.3).
  • Following Wednesday's game, the Camels hit the road for games Saturday at High Point (6:00 p.m.) and Feb. 16 at Radford (6:30).
  • Gardner-Webb leads Big South and ranks 17th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.389).  In league games only, the Runnin' Bulldogs lead the conference in both scoring defense (61.3) and FG%D (.385).
  • Campbell stands 6-5 all-time vs. Gardner-Webb at Gore Arena.  CU defeated GWU 63-57 in the 2021 Big South Championship quarterfinal round in Buies Creek.
  • Under head coach Tim Craft, the Runnin' Bulldogs have not endured a losing season in Big South Conference play in his nine seasons. Craft's teams own an 88-64 record vs. the Big South, reaching at least 10 wins in seven of his eight full seasons.
  • Over the last nine seasons, Gardner-Webb has six wins over Power 5 Conference schools - Clemson, Purdue, Nebraska, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and most recently. Georgia (Dec. 29, 2021).
  • Campbell and Gardner-Webb have played each other on three different levels.  The teams squared off twice as junior college members in the '50s, then played 3 times as NAIA members in the late '60s-early '70s.  The teams also met as rivals in the Atlantic Sun Conference before GWU joined the Big South in 2008-09.  Campbell, which was a Big South charter member from 1984-94, returned to the league in 2011-12.
  • Seven Gardner-Webb standouts have gone on to play in the NBA, including Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore and All-Star John Drew.
