Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA. – Campbell will go home with a series split after dropping Sunday's game 5-3 to No. 14 Liberty. Four of Liberty's five runs, and six of their nine hits game in one big inning that proved to be enough for the Flames.
The loss drops Campbell back below .500 at 7-8, while Liberty improves to 11-3 on the year.
Zach Neto had another monster day at the plate, reaching four times with three hits, two RBI and a solo home run. The home run gave him three in the two-game series against the Flames after his two-blast day on Friday. It's the sixth time in his career he's gone deep in back-to-back games. He also had a single and double in his line.
Neto had a big weekend against the Flames, batting .714 in the two games with five hits, four of those going for extra bases and three home runs.
Liberty's big inning came in the fifth, the first one after removing Campbell starter
Cade Kuehler from the game. The first five batters reached safely off
Ty Cummings.
Aaron Rund allowed two of the inherited runners to score before a much-needed double play helped the Camels escape the inning.
Kuehler was effective through four innings and posted a line of 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 Ks.
Campbell had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, down two and with two men in scoring position, but
Jarrod Belbin was unable to drive them in and draw any closer than 5-3.
The game finished with plenty of drama in the top of the ninth. With runners on the corners and one out,
Connor Denning grounded into an apparent run-scoring fielder's choice to bring Neto to the plate representing the go-ahead run. Following a review, it was ruled that
Lawson Harrill's slide into second was interference and ultimately ended the game.
Liberty's Mason Fluharty earned the win while
Ty Cummings was tagged with the loss. Cade Hungate picked up the save for the Flames.
The Camels are back in action on Tuesday at UNCG. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. in Greensboro.
