Box Score KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Campbell pitching struggled to locate and the bats never found a rhythm as Campbell fell 12-4 to Charlotte Tuesday night at Atrium Health Ballpark.
The loss drops Campbell to 9-11 heading into Big South play, while Charlotte advances to 14-6 on the season.
Campbell struck first with a three-run second inning.
Drake Pierson drove in the first run with an RBI single ahead of a run-scoring error and a
Ty Babin squeeze bunt to plate another.
But the 3-0 lead didn't last long, as the home half of the inning spelled disaster for the Camels. Campbell pitching issued six walks and hit one batter during the inning, along with allowing a pair of two-run singles and committing one error. By the time it was said and done, the 49ers plated six to take a 6-3 lead.
After allowing another in the third,
Connor Denning helped get one back with a sac fly in the fourth. The Camels would've liked to get more there after settling for just the one run with the bases loaded and one out.
Charlotte added three more in the fifth to take a commanding 10-4 lead, one that would eventually increase to the 12-4 final score.
Starting pitcher
George Ferguson (0-2) was tagged with the loss after lasting just 1.0+ innings and allowing four runs, three of them earned. Although he allowed five runs,
Jonathan Beymer turned in a solid outing, lasting a career-long 5.0 innings and striking out three, while working 1-2-3 innings in both the fourth and sixth.
Six Campbell pitchers combined to walk 10 49ers on the night in addition to a pair of hit by pitches.
Jordan Irizarry made his second appearance with the Camels and struck out a pair.
Tyler Halstead reached three times on the night, officially going 0-0 with a walk and two HBP. Beyond that, Campbell scattered just three hits, all singles. The Camels still kept busy on the bases thanks to seven walks issued by Charlotte on the evening.
Charlotte's Anthony Casciola picked up the win tossing 4.1 scoreless relief innings. All four of Campbell's runs were charged to started Hale Sims, who worked 3.1 innings and issued five walks.
The Fighting Camels return to action Friday for the start of Big South play. The Camels open up with a 2021 Big South championship game rematch, facing Presbyterian in Buies Creek. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
