Campbell hosts Hampton in weekend series

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell continues Big South play as it hosts Hampton at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader will be an audio-only broadcast with Chris Hemeyer and Lendl Suggs providing commentary.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Campbell leads the all-time series, 12-1
  • Coach Sho is 3-0 against the Pirates, last meeting in a series back in 2019. Both the 2020 and 2021 series against Hampton were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic

LAST TIME OUT

  • Campbell fell 4-1 against Coastal Carolina
  • Kayla Fredendall drove in the lone run of the game as the Camels fell to 10-3 at home and 20-12 overall

HEAD COACH SHARONDA MCDONALD-KELLEY

  • Enters her fourth season with Campbell (84-74, .520)
  • In 2021, Campbell won the Big South regular season and tournament title with a 28-19 overall record and 15-3 mark in Big South play, leading to its first NCAA Tournament berth and victory since 2009
  • Spent time as an assistant coach at Ohio State, Florida, LSU and Texas Tech prior to becoming head coach of the Camels
  • Four-time All-Big 12 selection as a player for Texas A&M (2004-07). Holds numerous records for the Aggies including most runs scored and stolen bases. Led the NCAA in 2005 with 48 steals to earn the Golden Shoe Award. Her 73 consecutive stolen bases during her tenure at Texas A&M tied an NCAA record, and she led the Aggies to the Women's College World Series as a senior for the first time in 20 years. She compiled a .338 batting average throughout her four-year career in College Station

SMITH NETS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HONORS

  • Isabella Smith picked up Big South Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season after her performances in the circle for the week of March 30 through April 3
  • Smith started in three of Campbell's four games on the week, holding ERA of 0.44 after allowing just one earned run  across 16 innings. A redshirt-freshman, Smith allowed six hits, three walks and struck out 28 batters
  • In Campbell's midweek game at North Carolina Central she tossed four innings, struck out seven and gave up two hits and one earned run
  • On Saturday, Smith tied her career-high with 12 strikeouts and scattered two hits in a complete game shutout effort in the Camels 6-0 win at North Carolina A&T. The Raleigh, N.C. native followed the next day striking out nine batters in another complete game shutout as Campbell earned a 8-0 (5 inn.) run-rule victory against the Aggies

DEFENDING HOME TURF

  • Campbell owns 10-3 record at home to start the 2022 season
  • The start marks the best under Coach Sho and is the best overall since 2013 when the Camels started 12-1 at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium

THE CAMEL CHAIN

  • A gold-painted camel on a chain (The Camel Chain) is given to any Campbell player to hit a home run
  • The Camel Chain was introduced to the team in head coach Sharonda McDonald-Kelley's first season at the helm in 2019
