Camels closing in on program record

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Fighting Camels are closing in on a high profile program record that has stood for 36 years: home runs in a season. The Camels are now at 100 on the year, just six shy of the record 106 hit by the 1985 team with at least seven games remaining.

Campbell has averaged more than two per game this season and is one of just four teams in the nation to reach triple digit home runs so far. After hitting just four home runs through the first 11 games of the season, the Camels have now hit 2.35 HR/game since.

This year's squad has reached 100 in 49 games, the exact number of games the '85 team played. The '85 team led the country in HR/game at 2.16/game. John Posey led the team with 26 blasts and Bill Wilkes added 22, both marks still standing as first and second in a single season in program history.

Drake Pierson has led the charge this season, leaving the yard 17 times. He paces six players that have all hit double-digit home runs. In total, fourteen different players have gone deep this year, with 13 of those doing so more than once. It doesn't seem to matter where Campbell plays, with 59 home runs coming on the road and 41 at home.

The homers have come in bunches for the Camels, with 24 mutli-home run games, 17 times hitting three or more, nine times hitting four or more, six times with five or more, and once with 10 in a single game.

There has been plenty of power in the program lately, with Campbell hitting 73 blasts a year ago, then good for third (now fourth) in program history.

Both the '85 and '22 teams will be side-by-side throughout the record books, with the teams also responsible for the two largest wins and run-scoring days in program history. The 1985 team beat Radford 38-0, while this year had the 36-4 win over Presbyterian.

Campbell has a shot to break the home run record before the end of the regular season, with a trip to ECU on Tuesday and a series at home against Radford from Thursday-Sunday.
