Camels prevail over USC Upstate 51-49

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Brittany Staves poured in a career-high 18 points and scored the go-ahead basket to lift Campbell over USC Upstate 51-49 Wednesday night at Gore Arena.

In a game with 14 lead changes and eight ties, Campbell improves to 9-7 overall and 4-1 in Big South play, claiming its sixth-straight win at home.

After Isabella Geraci put the Spartans ahead 49-48 with 1:22 to play, Staves drove across the paint and scored a contested lay-up. She added a free throw to put the Camels ahead by two.

The Camels were called for an offensive foul with 7.2 seconds left giving USC Upstate (6-9, 3-1) one final chance, but Geraci's jumper from outside the paint missed.

Staves, who scored eight in the fourth quarter alone, made 7-of-16 shots and pulled down six rebounds.

Gianni Boone added 12 points and four boards while Christabel Ezumah added four points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Audrey Fuller finished with six points, four rebounds and three steals.

Geraci led Upstate with 14 points, Jeni Levine added 10 and Trinity Johnson finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

The Camels forced 21 turnovers and held Upstate to 36.6 percent shooting (15-41) from the field and 21.4 percent (3-14) from three.

CU shot 32.2 percent (19-59) from the floor and made 5-of-6 free throws while the visiting Spartans made 16-of-20 from the charity stripe.

Campbell continues conference play this Saturday as it heads to Winthrop. Tip-off in Rock Hill, S.C. is set for 2:00 PM.
