BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell heads into the Southern Conference slate this weekend with a trio of duals, including a home double header on Saturday.
The Camels (10-8, 1-0 SoCon) will host Presbyterian (3-8, 0-4 SoCon) at 1:00 p.m., followed by Davidson (2-6, 1-2 SoCon) in its 2022-23 home finale.
The matches will be held at McCall Court inside the Pope Convocation Center, with a very
limited amount of tickets remaining. CU will honor its three graduating seniors,
Cameron Andrews,
Calvin Hayford and
Troy Nation, also recognizing its
2023 Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, former letterman and head coach Jerry Hartman '82 between duals.
Campbell will then hit the road for VMI (7-4, 1-2 SoCon), taking on the Keydets on Sunday, January 29, at 2:00 p.m. in Lexington, Va.
Since 2016, Campbell is a combined 16-0 against PC, Davidson and VMI, going a perfect 7-0 against both the Wildcats and Keydets, as well as 2-0 against the Blue Hose, taking both of its all-time matchups against the fourth year program. During that stretch, Campbell has outscored the trio 642-57.
The Camels are coming off a 2-1 day at the
2023 Chippewa Challenge, hosted by CU at the Pope Convocation Center.
Campbell defeated Central Michigan 23-15 and CSU Bakersfield 32-8, while falling to American 19-18 in the second edition of the Chippewa Challenge. The Eagles reeled off a trio of one point victories, topping the Chippewas 18-17 and Bakersfield 16-15 before edging the host Camels 19-18 in the finale.
Caleb Hopkins at 184 pounds and
Levi Hopkins at 197, along with heavyweight
Taye Ghadiali and
Shannon Hanna at 141 went 3-0 on the day, while
Domenic Zaccone and
Gabriel Hixenbaugh combined for a CU sweep at 133 pounds for the Camels.
Following the unbeaten day, Hanna was named
SoCon Wrestler of the Week. Among Hanna's three victories was a ranked win over No. 25 Angelo Martinoni of CSU Bakersfield, 3-1, picking up the go-ahead takedown with under a minute to go in regulation for the victory. The win was his second win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Lakeland, Fla. native also registered a 22-13 major decision over Central Michigan's Jimmy Nugent, while topping American's Ethan Szerencsits, 8-6.
Hanna has now won 10 of his last 13 matchups, with his only defeats coming against ranked foes. The senior is 14-8 overall on the season, ranked at No. 32 in his weight class in the season's first NCAA Coaches' Panel, released last week.
Camels have now been named SoCon wrestlers of the week three times this season.
Hanna is one of six Camels nationally ranked in the season's first NCAA coaches' panel. Joining Hanna are No. 25
Anthony Molton at 125 pounds, Zaccone at No. 29 at 133, with 184 pounder
Caleb Hopkins ranked No. 28.
Levi Hopkins is also No. 29 at 197, while Ghadiali rounds out the list for the Camels at No. 13 at heavyweight.
Following this weekend's action, Campbell will split squads on Sunday, February 5, continuing its SoCon schedule at The Citadel (2:00 p.m.), as well as competing at the Duke Round Robin.
