Camels eliminate defending champs 62-43

CU holds Longwood to 29.6 percent shooting to advance to semis

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Campbell held Longwood to less than 30 percent shooting and defeated the defending champs 62-43 Thursday night in the quarterfinal round of the Hercules Tires Big South Championship at Bojangles' Coliseum.
 
The third-seeded Camels (16-14) will face second-seeded High Point (16-13) in Saturday's 8 p.m. semifinal.  Top seed Gardner-Webb (27-4) meets fourth seed Radford (14-16) in Saturday's 6 p.m. match up.
 
In a rematch of last year's Big South final, Campbell never trailed and led by as many as 25 against the sixth-seeded Lancers. 
 
The Camels, who entered the contest ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense (52.3) and ninth in field goal defense (.349), limited Longwood to just 16-of-54 shooting (.296).
 
Audrey Fuller scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dealt four assists to lead four Camels in double figures.  Erika Joseph added 12 points on 4-of-7 threes, while Brittany Staves chipped in 11 and Christabel Ezumah posted her eighth double-double of the year with 10 points and 14 boards.
 
Campbell, which entered as the league leader in rebounding margin, out-rebounded Longwood 51-22 and allowed only six second-chance points.
 
Brooke Anya came off the bench to lead Longwood (9-21) with 12 points, while Anne-Hamilton Leroy scored 11.
 
Fuller's three from the right side with 3:32 remaining game the Camels their largest lead of the night (60-35).
 
CU finished 10-of-24 (.417) from 3-point range and shot 44 percent overall (24-54)
 
The Camels shot 56 percent in the opening half, led by as many as 18, and took a 39-25 advantage into the dressing room.  CU hit 8-of-14 threes (.571) before the break, paced by Joseph, who knocked down all three of her attempts beyond the arc.
 
Courtney Dahlquist hit back-to-back threes at the back end of a 17-2 run midway through the second quarter.  Dahlquist's corner three gave the Camels a 37-19 cushion before the Lancers ended a 5:17 scoring drought.
 
Longwood shot just 29 percent (8-28) in the first half, while Campbell outrebounded the Lancers 23-9 in the first 20 minutes.
 
Campbell advanced to the semifinal round of the Big South tourney for the fourth-straight time.
