Nine Camels earn all-conference honors

Smith named pitcher of the year, Gillespie named freshman of the year

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Isabella Smith was named Big South Pitcher of the Year, Madilyn Gillespie was named Freshman of the Year and nine Camels earned all-conference recognition, the Big South announced Wednesday afternoon.

Four players, including Smith and Gillespie, earned all-conference first team honors, three were named to the second team with one named honorable mention. Additionally, two Camels earned all-freshman team honors another was named to the all-academic team.

Pitcher of the Year - Isabella Smith, P, R-So.
In just her second season, Isabella Smith has become one of the top pitchers in the nation. Smith became the program single-season strikeout leader and ranks seventh in the nation with 223 strikeouts on the year. Ranking third nationally with both 26 wins and 213.2 innings pitched, Smith holds an ERA of 1.90 with 18 complete games, two shutouts and three saves. A native of nearby Raleigh, N.C., Smith becomes the first Camel to be named Big South Pitcher of the Year.

Freshman of the Year - Madilyn Gillespie, 1B, Fr.
In her first collegiate season, Gillespie ranks third in conference only games hitting .413 and led the league with a .491 on base percentage. Overall she ranks second on the team and eighth in the conference with a .342 batting average, connecting for 39 hits, including five doubles and two triples. The team leader with eight hit-by-pitches, she has had eight multi-hit games. A three time freshman of the week selection this year, Gillespie becomes the first Camel to be named conference Freshman of the Year since Courtney Klingler in 2013.

Claudia Ware, OF, R-Sr.
Ware has posted career-best numbers in her fifth and final season as a Camel, batting a team-best .359 with 31 runs, 52 hits, including 17 multi-hit games, and 25 RBI. Her on base percentage of .481 leads the conference and ranks 65th nationally. A second team all-conference selection in 2021, Ware ranks fifth nationally with 18 doubles. The only player to start in all 53 games for Campbell this season, Ware became the 11th player in program history to collect 200 career hits this year. The Big South leader with 30 walks, Ware sits one away from tying the program record of 111.

Alyssa Henault, SS, So.
Henault held a .324 batting average on the season, ranking 15th in the Big South with 48 hits and 13th with 13 stolen bases. In conference only games she batted .368, scored 13 runs on 21 hits and held a .429 on base percentage. Named Big South player of the week once this season, Henault ranks second in the conference with nine sacrifice bunts.

Second Team
Delaney McDilda, 3B, Jr.
McDilda ranks 14th in the Big South with a .330 batting average, 13th with eight doubles and 16th with a 0.392 on base percentage. In conference only games she hit .357 with 20 hits. Overall, McDilda had eight multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games. Playing the hot corner, she held a .968 fielding percentage after making 37 putouts and 84 assists with just four errors. This is the second time McDilda has been named to the second-team after earning the honor as a freshman in 2021.

Savannah White, C, So.
In conference only games, White ranks eighth with a .370 batting average, seventh with a 1.040 OPS, sixth with five doubles, ninth with a .431 on base percentage and 10th with 14 RBI. Commanding behind the plate, White made 187 putouts and 16 assists with just three errors for a .985 fielding percentage. She caught four runners steals, made one double play and recorded one pickoff.

Lindsey Hunt, DP, R-Jr.
Playing in her final season with the Camels, Hunt connected for 26 hits, including two doubles and her first collegiate home run this season. The Glen Mills, Pa. native has recorded eight multi-hit games and six-multi RBI games. This is the first all-conference honor for Hunt.

Honorable Mention
Tyra Parker, OF, So.
Parker's second season in a Campbell uniform is highlighted by ranking 29th nationally with 26 stolen bases and 22nd with five triples. With 29 runs, 38 hits and 16 RBI, Parker also swiped 14-for-14 stolen bases in conference only games. With plenty of diving catches throughout the season, Parker owns a perfect fielding percentage with 73 putouts in the outfield.

All-Freshman Team (Along with Madilyn Gillespie)
Makayla McClain, 2B, Fr.
McClain led all Big South freshmen with five triples and 26 stolen bases during the regular season, ranking 22nd and 29th nationally in those categories respectively. She hit .331 on the season and ranks 10th among conference leaders with 49 hits and 7th with 33 runs. Named conference freshman of the week twice, McClain has 10 multi-hit games, is tied for the team-lead with seven multi-RBI games, and is currently on a season-best nine game hitting streak.

All-Academic Team
Claudia Ware, OF, R-Sr.
In addition to earning first team honors, Ware was also selected to the all-academic team. Holding a cumulative GPA of 3.52, Ware will graduate from Campbell with a degree in accounting with plans to pursue a job in the field.

First year head coach Trena Prater guided the Camels to 38-13 mark, going 15-5 in Big South games to claim a third consecutive conference regular season title. The Camels continue play as they head to Radford, Va. for the Big South Championship. Seeded second, Campbell meets No. 3 USC Upstate to open the four team double-elimination tournament on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
