Camels set for Durham Regional

Campbell opens four-team, double-elimination regional Friday at 2:30 PM against Charlotte

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell is set to compete in its third-straight NCAA Tournament Regional in Durham, N.C. this weekend, May 19-21. The Fighting Camels open the four-team double-elimination Friday at 2:30 PM against Charlotte on ESPN+.

Tickets for the Durham Regional are now on sale. All-session tickets are $30 for grandstand seating and $21 for standing room/field seating. Single session tickets are $11 for grandstand seating and $8 for standing room/field seating. Single session tickets are valid for the entire day. Kids under the age of two are eligible for free admission. All tickets can be purchased using the link HERE.

LEADING OFF

  • Campbell (41-16) punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for a third-straight season after completing its three-peat Big South Championship run with a 7-5 victory over Longwood.
  • The Camels, who finished as Big South regular season co-champions for a third-straight season, have won over 40 games for the first time since 2008
  • Campbell has earned 30 or more wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Campbell's 38 wins in the regular season marked the most in program history since 1995 when the Camels won 41 regular season games
  • Campbell dropped just one conference series (against fellow regular season co-champions Longwood) and have not dropped more than two consecutive games all season
  • The Fighting Camels are back-to-back-to-back Big South Regular Season and Conference Tournament Championships bringing in a new coaching staff headed by Trena Prater. A Louisiana State graduate, Prater has spent her last four years as the associate head coach at the University of Iowa
  • Claudia Ware leads the Camels at the plate with a .375 batting average and 60 hits, including 20 doubles. Alyssa Henault is hitting .335 with 53 hits while Makayla McClain is hitting .331 with 53 hits, 27 RBI and five triples
  • Isabella Smith and Kayla Howald lead the Camels in the circle. Smith holds a 28-10 record with a 1.98 ERA, 235 strikeouts and a .201 batting average against in 233.1 innings while Howald holds a 12-5 record, 3.05 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 121.2 innings of work

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • Campbell earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for a third-straight season, the longest streak in program history, and sixth time overall (1995, 2008, 2009, 2021, 2022 and 2023)
  • In the last two seasons the Camels have made trips to the Knoxville Regional (2022) and the Stillwater Regional (2021)
  • Campbell's last win in the NCAA Tournament came at the Stillwater Regional in 2021 with a 7-1 victory over Boston in an elimination game
  • The Camels defeated North Carolina 7-6 at the Chapel Hill Regional in 2008 to eliminate the Tar Heels for its first NCAA Regional victory
  • The program's first NCAA Tournament victories overall came during the 1995 season as the Camels won two games over UNC Greensboro in a tournament play-in series held in Buies Creek. The Camels advanced to its first NCAA Regional in Columbia, S.C., dropping games to UCLA and hosts South Carolina

BIG SOUTH THREE-PEAT

  • Campbell has won each of the past three Big South tournament titles with a 7-5 victory over Longwood in a winner-take-all game last Saturday
  • Claudia Ware was named MVP of the Big South Championship after hitting .533 with eight hits, including two doubles and knocking her first homer of the season. She also added six runs, two RBI and one stolen base. Ware's RBI double in the final game gave the Camels a lead that they would not give up en route to winning the title
  • Sophomore left fielder Tyra Parker, who hit .357 and had several amazing catches in left field, and freshman right fielder Allyiah Swiney who hit .308 with a home run and four RBI joined Ware on the All-Tournament team
  • Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Isabella Smith also was named to the All-Tournament team after winning a pair of games and picking up a save. Smith struck out 12 batters overall and forced the final six outs in the title game

FIRST YEAR SUCCESS

  • Head coach Trena Prater is one of three coaches to lead their teams to the 2023 NCAA Tournament in their first year at their institution (Trisha Ford, Texas A&M / Dedeann Pendleton-Helm, Northern Colorado)

THREE YEARS, SIX TITLES

  • Campbell is one of three schools to have won each of their last three regular season and conference tournament championships (UMBC, Louisiana)

All-CONFERENCE AWARD WINNERS

  • Campbell featured nine players amongst the Big South's all-conference awardees
  • Isabella Smith was named Big South Pitcher of the Year, becoming the first Camel to win the award
  • First baseman Madilyn Gillespie was named Big South Freshman of the Year
  • Joining Smith and Gillespie on the All-Conference first team included outfielder Claudia Ware, who was also named to the all-academic team, and shortstop Alyssa Henault
  • Third baseman Delaney McDilda, catcher Savannah White and designated player Lindsey Hunt all earned second team honors
  • Tyra Parker garnered honorable mention all-conference honors while Makayla McClain was named to the conference's all-freshman team

SERIES HISTORY - Charlotte

  • Campbell trails in the all-time series 16-22-1
  • Campbell defeated the 49ers in the first weekend of play this season, 6-1, in an epic 12 inning battle. Smith tossed all 12 innings and set a program single-game record with 199 pitches. She totaled 11 strikeouts and allowed only six hits.

SERIES HISTORY - DUKE

  • Duke leads the all-time series 6-1
  • The Camels fell twice to the Blue Devils during the regular season, dropping games 7-0 and 11-0 in the Camel Stampede tournament in Buies Creek
  • Campbell lone win over the Blue Devils came in 2018, a 3-2 victory in Duke's inaugural season. Former Duke infielder and commentator for the Durham Regional, Raine Wilson, went 1-for-2 with one run and a RBI for the Blue Devils in that game

SERIES HISTORY - George Mason

  • Campbell leads the all-time series against George Mason, 4-1
  • Both teams last met in 2005 at the Elon Invitational where the Camels won 11-0

SCOUTING THE REGIONAL

  • Charlotte (33-21) earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, making their first appearance in the tournament in program history
  • The 49ers won the C-USA regular season but fell to Middle Tennessee in its conference tournament.
  • Former CU pitcher Georgeanna Barefoot transferred to Charlotte following the 2022 season. Barefoot holds a 5.33 ERA in 43.1 innings pitched this season for the 49ers.
  • Graduate infielder Kassidy Krupit is the only 49er to hit over .300 this season. Krupit is hitting .383 with 67 hits, including 12 doubles and 13 homers, and 48 RBI
  • Sophomore Sam Gress leads Charlotte in the circle with a 1.81 ERA and a 21-12 record overall. She's totaled 140 strikeouts and has held foes to a .234 batting average
  • The 49ers rank No. 9 with 1.39 home runs per game and No. 24 with 0.44 doubles per game
  • Duke, who earned the No. 8 overall seed as regional hosts, owns a 45-10 overall record and fell short to Florida State in the ACC tournament final
  • Freshman outfielder D'Auna Jennings leads the team batting .453 with 73 hits and 19 stolen bases
  • Infielders Ana Gold and Gisele Tapie each have 50 RBI or more
  • Freshman Cassidy Curd leads the Duke pitching staff with a 16-1 overall record, posting a 1.57 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 111.1 innings
  • George Mason (35-22) makes its NCAA Tournament debut after winning the Atlantic-10 conference tournament title for the first time in program history
  • The Patriots rank No. 7 nationally with 133 stolen bases and No. 10 with 90 doubles on the year
  • Senior Haley Taormina leads the country with 21 doubles. She also leads the Patriots with 61 hits, 47 RBI and eight home runs
  • Graduate pitcher Aly Rayle leads George Mason with a 2.01 ERA and 242 strikeouts in 202.0 innings pitched

SMITH BREAKS SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS

  • Isabella Smith set the Campbell single-season strikeout record, achieving her 218th strikeout of the season against Norfolk State
  • She also broke the single-season wins record with her 27th win in the Big South Championship

CLUTCH CAMELS

  • Campbell has won six games via walk-off in the 7th or extra innings this season and have three walk-off run-rule wins
  • Last season the Camels went 6-0 in games that went extra innings

STAT LEADERS

200 CAREER HITS FOR WARE

  • Claudia Ware recorded her 200th career hit in the Longwood series last weekend
  • Ware, a fifth-year senior, becomes the 11th player in program history to record 200 hits or more as a Camel

200 CAREER STRIKEOUTS FOR HOWALD

  • Kayla Howald recorded her 200th career strikeout during the Longwood series
  • A redshirt-junior, Howald is having a career season with a 3.05 ERA, 12 wins and 82 strikeouts

100 CAREER HITS FOR MCDILDA

  • Delaney McDilda achieved her 100th career hit in Campbell's 6-0 win against Norfolk State
  • The junior third baseman is hitting a career-best .317 with 38 hits and 22 RBI this season

SMITH SHINING IN THE CIRCLE

  • Redshirt sophomore Isabella Smith has become one of the top pitchers in the country for Campbell this year
  • The Raleigh native ranks 3rd in the country with 233.1 innings pitched, 9th with 235 strikeouts and 3rd with 28 victories
  • Smith recorded her 200th strikeout this season against Radford. She is the second Campbell pitcher to reach the single-season mark.
  • She broke the Campbell single-season strikeout record of 217 with her 218th strikeout of the year in a game against Norfolk State
  • Smith broke the Campbell single-season wins record in the Big South tournament against USC Upstate
  • In the regular season series against USC Upstate, Smith became the 11th Campbell pitcher to record 300 strikeouts or more in her career
  • In two seasons with the Camels, Smith already ranks 5th on the program's all-time strikeout list with 382
  • Smith has tied her career-high with 12 strikeouts three times this season (vs. Rider, Radford and NC State) and has posted double-digit strikeouts nine times overall this year

IN THE NATIONAL RANKS

REGULAR SEASON THREE-PEAT

  • Campbell earned a share of the Big South regular season title for a third straight season
  • The Camels have claimed four conference series this season; sweeping USC Upstate, Presbyterian and Radford while winning two of three games against Gardner-Webb and Winthrop
  • Campbell finished conference play hitting .313 in conference games, including having two players hitting over .400 (Ware - .433, Gillespie - .413)
  • Conference foes meanwhile hit just .213 against the Camels

CAA IN 2024

  • Campbell University has accepted an invitation to join the Colonial Athletic Association in all sports except wrestling effective July 1, 2023. The current 2023 season will be Campbell's final year in the Big South.
  • Full CAA members include College of Charleston, Delaware, Drexel, elon, Hampton, Hofstra, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, UNC Wilmington, Northeastern, Stony Brook, Towson, and William & Mary
